"I have always failed to understand the common idea that a poor sequel can somehow “ruin” the original. This thinking seems to suggest that the previous film is altered by a lesser adaptation. This is untrue not only on a physical, objective level, but on a metaphorical level as well. The source material is still the same, and any attempt at a sequel or remake exists beyond it, leaving its predecessor with the same content and feelings and effects."
