Our uni uses a system called TurnItIn, which basically checks your work for plagiarism. In fact it does more than that, it also detects changes in language and grammar patterns to figure out if work has been copied/written by someone else. It’s scarily good.
It’s so frustrating that some courses are allowed free access to the system before they hand work in, whereas us physics lot don’t. It seems like an unfair advantage, and students can’t access TurnItIn by themselves - they have to be given a code by a tutor.
HOWEVER, I stumbled across a free student version! It’s from the same company as TurnItIn and it does the same job for you. You have to pay, but it compares your work to the existing TurnItIn database or both student and external works.
If you’re interested and, like me, get stressed not knowing if TurnItIn is going to flag your work up, give it a look. Don’t worry - submitting a piece of work doesn’t add it to the database, so you don’t need to worry about your work already being on the database when you eventually submit it.
