Even though Sam cites his first meeting Rebecca as the inspiration for the live-action ATA, I donât think he would have acted on that inspiration until he was sure it was not only something REBECCA wanted, but also something that could help her.
What if Rebecca somehow blames herself for what happened to her original family? And how this manifests is that whenever something goes wrongâeven something smallâthat may possibly be her fault, she lashes out at her reflection, the âgirl in the glass.â Sam watches this happen time and again, and realizes that she also associates her reflection with depictions of herself in photographs and home videos. Itâs deeply disturbing for her, and itâs not something sheâs able to fully articulate. So Sam names her reflection Amandaâsomeone whoâs worthy of loveâand starts writing stories about her to tell Rebecca. And when Rebecca has the chance to embody these stories for herself, by performing as Amanda in the show, it gives her a sense of agency over her past, and a newfound love of the âgirl in the glass.â
I found a wrinkle above my eyebrows, and I could bemoan it, complain about ageing when I'm just nineteen. But there was a time when I was thirteen and desperate to die when I thought I would never make it to twenty. I'm not twenty yet but I'm older, I survived, I will be getting old and I will keep smiling and frowning and worrying until I'm old and wrinkled all over and I look like a raisin.
In Starstruck! Amanda represents Rebeccaâs reflectionâsheâs the âgirl in the glassâ she initially blames for losing her former parents. At the same time she loves the world and she loves Sam and itâs thanks to his stories that sheâs able to see the âglass girlâ in a new light. Sam takes pictures and videos of their adventures together so Rebecca has something tangible she can hold onto, after having lost her old life. He teaches her how to face her fears by reframing them as learning experiences, and each experienceâeach lessonâis saved and protected, be it behind glass frames or screens. Amanda becomes not just the girl in the mirror to Rebecca, but the girl in all those happy memories. The girl who helped teach her all these special lessons. The girl dancing through the film and photos on loop every time Rebecca needs a reminder of how far sheâs come. Rebeccaâs âescapismâ is her own memories. And every day Amanda is there by her side, ready as ever to make more.
