The idea of not having to leave is almost enough to amuse Atieno ever so slightly. There’s a hint of a grim smile in response before their gaze lowers back down to the table itself.
“Maybe not now. Maybe I don’t have to leave at this moment. But I’ve always got to go. I’ve always had to stay on the move alone and ..little breaks, little moments of being around people.“ They give a little bit of a knowing sigh.
“They’re the exception. The bits of variety when getting to be on my own gets to me after such a long time. Besides, you can’t genuinely think that I haven’t been used to having to leave. Keeping myself at a distance from whoever I encounter even when I don’t want to?“
