Despatch Rider, #WRAF (Womenâs Royal Air Force), France, #1918. Iâm commemorating the #100years since the end of the first world war with a small series of illustrations depicting those who served in uniform.
Members of the Women's Royal Air Force in Cologne (Germany, 1919).
The first group of WRAFs arrived in France to begin their overseas service in 1919, and later in the year it was decided to also send a contingent to Germany, to be based in Cologne. Â They assisted the army of occupation, and replaced men who had been demobilized from the forces, working as nurses, drivers, clerks, telephonists and domestics. Â They became known as âLadies of the Rhine,â and also helped to raise morale by organizing sports days and dances.
