WR 104 - Wolf Rayet 104
WR 104
WR 104, a Wolf-Rayet star some 8,000 light years from Earth. Wolf-Rayet stars are very hot supermassive stars with a very strong stellar wind by which they are losing a lot of their mass. Most Wolf-Rayet stars end their lives in spectacular supernovae and may even be a source of gamma ray bursts. WR 104 has a companion star that is pulling its outflow of mass into a spiral. Observations over time reveal the motion of that spiral. WR 104 caused some concern, as its axis of alignment may be facing Earth, therefore putting Earth in the crosshairs of any GRB it may release. Newer observations indicate that its axis is offset from Earth by 30º or more, directing any potential GRB safely away from Earth.Â
