Jules takes one look at him and goes dear God that is a literal child and through continuous interactions with BJ is forced to re-evaluate the last eight years of his entire life, because this child has more steel in his spine than anyone else he’s ever met, but also no fucking idea how war works.

it’s Jules finally making a stand that sends Braeburn into realizing some things about himself and his contracts, and that he’s actually fond of the people he works with, and if he keeps down this path, Tony and Rizzo are both going to end up dead, and yeah, okay, maybe he does care for Jules as more than just a friend, as more than just a warm body to be around.

and of course, this rockets Tony and Rizzo’s piece of the plot, as the central rally points for their team, and their team rallying bleeds into them being able to pull Feliciano out of the frying pan, so to speak, which gives Lukas enough drive to make some fast realizations of his own, which gives Scout a chance to go, yeah, it’s maybe time a few things change.

i’m excited about Wings of War because it touches on a lot of things that are just…good, I think. it’s set in a world where war is the 9-5 day job. there’s a lot of hurt, and a lot of old wounds rearing their ugly heads again…but at the center of it all, the story is about human kindness, how we cannot survive without helping each other.

it makes me think of the archeologist who said that humanity began with a healed femur; that we aren’t truly humans until there’s someone to help nurse us back to health. 

and this story is about that.

about a group of tired, desperate people who have become numb to the ways their life is bad, because a bad life is better than being dead, right? and it’s about realizing and remembering and deciding that, no, a good life is the end goal, that friendship and love and laughter is the end goal.

the main Intent that’s focused on during WoW is the idea of Mercy, but not just on the battlefield. it’s Mercy that lets us help each other, that let’s us acknowledge we need help. Mercy in the form of a warm jacket, of a fight ended early, of bandages that are put on with help, of preening each other’s wings, of listening to music together on long car rides. the Mercy of not being alone anymore.

and i’m just so excited to share that with everyone, these elements of humanity and kindness, and how even in the harshest, most awful situations, they can still exist.

this theme is continued in Petrichor, the sequel series, where the focus is on the spirits of friendship, and how each member of the main cast is hooked to that very real and very much dying spirit, and in both Petrichor and GHD, it takes unlocking the secrets of that spirit to really push the character over into the Point Needed to save the day.

so why would that trend end with WoW? 

it wouldn’t.

and I've already established that the GSC is trying to manufacture faux Intent, and that the idea of giving Mercy is technically not allowed for the job but a big thing unique to both the game nd the world itself, right?

and then you’ve got BJ, the youngest of anyone in the four Compass Teams, who joined this job literally just so Elias could be given Mercy in the form of treatment, and me over here scrambling to try and figure out who-or-what changes these hardened, desperate guys
