This is going to sound insane, but I keep thinking abt the, like, cis-bioessentialist and hetrosexual-panic coded curration of Mat being the one to "accidentally" stab Rand, and Elayne being the nurturing-female flipside of Mat's destructive-male. The Horror of the Genders gendering according to the ontology of the world in that focalized moment... I nearly threw up, and I don't think there's so much intention put into it, but it's there, I'm not insane. I understand. And you're so right abt the Lews/Iashmael = Rand/Mat stuff, and I dont think a reborn Ishamael-Mat scenario is necessary for that reading at all. Sometimes the parallels be paralleling! Ik we're supposed to conceive of Ishamael more as a devil-figure for light/dark dualism reasons but if Lanfear is a corrupt Eve-figure, Ishamael is kind of a Lilith figure... Now I'm sounding insane but "Leave me! I was created only to cause sickness to infants." Is such a narrative-conscious villain line, or, Judas-coded, if you will... and the whole bit of her wanting to top Adam is primarily an opaque moment of women demanding equality, and panic/chaos/pursuit/punishment ensue since it would fracture the patriarchy in a way society was not (yet) prepared for, but it's also sooo the Tag-On Side Character wanting to break out of her assigned role(=gender role, narrative role)... Okay the last bit is half-joking. Or is it... Anyway I kind of enjoy the Bioessentialism of WOT world, not because I think it's correct or real (it's neither), but the levels of dissonance leave room for such good moments of horror, especially when riding off Mat's whole bit of rattling the bars of his narrative-cage and wanting to escape his skin (and to top rand. Which he did. Via the Freudian nightmare dagger...
Gotta take a moment to appreciate best boy Rand. I love how smart he is when he’s not smart, if that makes sense. When he doesn’t know something, he’ll do whatever it takes to fill up those knowledge gaps. He wants to prepare for the Last Battle but doesn’t know what to do? No problem, he’ll just scour every book he can find on the Karaethon Cycle. He knows he’s destined to destroy the world, so he gets busy with building schools in the realms he rules hoping that important information won’t be lost in the coming chaos. Even when he thinks he knows something, he’ll often second guess himself. He’s taking time out of his busy day to chat with philosophers. He’s funding STEM!! Ogier come to town and he’s immediately like, “bet, they’ll help me find the waygates so I can try and control the flow of shadowspawn”. He’s so proactive even with the most minute details. It’s just so refreshing just how intelligent and well read he is — or tries to be. I think that’s one of the major reasons why the TV adaptation didn’t really do his character justice. Yes, Rand is the quintessential male fantasy protagonist. But he’s much more than a sword or his channeling. He’s a mini prodigy in his own way; I get shocked everytime I remember he’s an actual musician lol. Anyway, he’s literally the character of all time. Rand haters y’all need to get with the program idk
Forever grateful for Robert Jordan’s insistence on writing female characters who feel real. It’s just easy to pinpoint any one female character and identify her motivations, strengths, and weaknesses as it is with his male characters. Not just that, but his female characters are allowed to have relationships with on another. Whether is moving friendships like the Wondergirls or Moiraine x Siuan, mentorships like Egwene and the wise ones, or rivalries like Siuan and Elaida. It all feels real. Nothing is contrived. And it’s wonderful. Women drive the plot as much as the men do. Women are sources of inspiration and dread alike just as the men are. In fact, I’d make the unpopular opinion that his female antagonists/villains (Moghedien, Lanfear, Graendal, Alviarin, Therava, Galina, Elaida, etc.) are more intriguing than their male counterparts; with the exception of Ishy. I have some issues with his writing, but when it comes to his women, he was more than exceptional!
“I WON’T SHOUT AT YOU!” Nynaeve shouted
She’s so…. 😭 how can anyone hate her?

Something I realized while thinking about Rand, Rhuidean, and the Car’a’carn prophecy that states “only a remnant of a remnant shall he save” is that Rand, the Aiel, and Avendesora all remnants of a remnant:
Avendesora is the last surviving chora tree, born from the branches the Da’shain Aiel (and later the Jenn Aiel) carried to a place of safety. It represents hope and peace preserved through long periods of suffering.
The current Aiel are remnants too, survivors of the splintering of the Da’shain Aiel. They now carry the seeds of Rhuidean, and Avendesora, forward. But prophecy says they must be culled once more for hope to endure. They are the seeds of what will be, just as the remaining few Chora branches became Avendesora.
And Rand himself is a remnant of a remnant. His ancestors destroyed themselves to carry peace forward, and Rand must open himself to destruction, too. He is the Dragon that unites the world, not just the Aiel. His journey through Rhuidean is the perfect mirror of his greater purpose: to carry the seed of hope amidst war and ruin. That’s why he is creator and destroyer.
What was is, and will be once more. The wheel turns, and the seeds endure. From endings come new beginnings….Jordan cooked here.
Things Nynaeve has done since she started training (key word = ‘training’) to be Aes Sedai, all the while battling a block:
Battled and captured Moghedien, one of the Foresaken
Captured Moghedien AGAIN after suffering a huge mental blow, and chaining her
Facing Rahvin, one of the most powerful channelers ever, thus helping Rand with the kill
Healing Logain from gentling
Healing Leane and Siuan from stilling
And there’s more to come…. Yeah, no one is touching her. EVER!
Love the parallel between Elayne and Egwene, two young women who have risen to power a little too quickly but needing to secure their rule over powerful cities. Elayne was primed for this, having been raised as daughter-heir to arguably the most powerful nation in Randland, but Egwene was only the mayor’s daughter in some backwater village until like a year ago. And as both stake their claims against older women who seem to have the odds in their favor, Egwene is the one besieging a well supplied city at risk of her own strength, while Elayne is the one being besieged though relatively well fed.
