Blind Lemon Jefferson “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” (1927)  

Known to be Blind Lemon Jefferson’s most well-known number. Jefferson died in December 1929 and had an unmarked grave resting at Wortham Black Cemetary in Texas but was finally designated one in 1967. Thirty years of wear and tear later of his original marker and plot deteriorating, Jefferson had his own headstone inscribed: “Lord, it’s one kind favour I’ll ask of you, see that my grave is kept clean.” Ironic since up until then, the lack of inscription became a reminder.

As of now, Wortham groundskeepers are doing just that as they should have and as of 2007 renamed the cemetary after him. His memory is still going as past artists in Bob Dylan, B.B. King, Diamanda Galas, Laibach, Lou Reed, Mavis Staples, and many more have covered this hit; with Peter, Paul & Mary, Canned Heat, and the Grateful Dead covering it as “One Kind Flavor”. One version that Ω+ holds close is Keiji Haino’s, who covers this as the closer to both hard and soft versions of 2004′s Black Blues. As Jefferson’s original is no more than three minutes, Haino’s patience for the soft version takes it to fifteen minutes. As a closer, however, Haino’s cover does it musical justice for its’ properly somber, solemn, and haunting-to-be-believed tone and atmosphere; a true vision of paying respects for the dead.
