Busting common myths part 2: Vitamin C Watch out, male stone formers! Vitamin C intake has been proposed as a risk factor for kidney stone formation because vitamin C may increase urinary oxalate excretion. A long-term study of over 197,000 men and women revealed that while dietary vitamin C (e.g. orange juice) is not associated with the risk of kidney stones, combining them with supplemental vitamin C (e.g. vitamin C capsules) increases the risk of kidney stones in men. It is unclear why it does not affect women in the same way, but take note of your vitamin C intake and don’t overdo it!
