So unfortunately I was not able to put this on Facebook as I haven’t discussed it with my mom yet, however I wanted to make sure I made this post before #pride month ended. 
My freshman year of high school, I came out as Transgender and began going by Nnyl. Over the years I’ve begun to realize that this name is not a comfort to me and I didn’t really choose it for myself. 
My Sophomore/Junior year of high school I began experimenting with the thought of changing my name. I had trans friends who had changed their name again after the initial change, and knew of others who had as well and wanted to see how it felt. Unfortunately, this year was also the time I was in one of the most toxic relationships of my life. He (a cis man) told me that if I tried to change it I would be a disappointment, that I worked so hard to get Nnyl accepted and I would be throwing it all away, and that he wouldn’t support me (not to mention he accused me of cheating because of it but I digress). These words have lingered with me for years since then, not only making me more uncomfortable with the name, but now uncomfortable with the idea of changing it. 
Luckily since I’ve been in college I’ve been met with the biggest support system I’ve ever known and while I’m still scared, I’ve become comfortable again with the idea of changing my name. 
Whether you’re trans or not, you should be able to feel comfortable with your name; it is your most true identifying factor. So change your name, change it again, change it a billion times. The only person who needs to be comfortable with it, the only person you need to impress with it is yourself. It’s your name, not anyone else’s. Have pride in it. You’re allowed, no matter what anyone (including your birth certificate) says.

Deciding who to celebrate (a day late) this World Pride Day, I was happily spoilt for choice. As founding father & author of the earliest Gothic novel, Horace Walpole (who is commonly believed to have been gay) paved the way for many Gothic LGBT+ authors and characters to follow. Oscar Wilde, whose 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' (1898) is essential reading, for example. Bram Stoker, whose Dracula (character) provides enlightening subtext on fear and discrimination surrounding homosexuality is another popular choice. Virgina Woolf deserves attention, as does Alice Walker's 'The Color Purple' which explores so many important topics, including race and gender as well as sexual identity... Instead, however, today I've decided to show you a subgroup within a wider literary movement that I don't often see discussed here; that is the lesbian and bisexual females of the Modernist movement who flocked to Paris' Left Bank in the 1920s and rarely left. At their centre was Sylvia Beach, publisher and founder of the original Shakespeare & Co. Bookshop, was Gertrude Stein whose dissected language is a microscope to the soul, was Djuna Barnes whose novel is an important moment in lesbian fiction with some of the first overtly gay characters. 'Nightwood' is on my tbr - I am excited to discover how the Gothic manifests in Barnes' representation of multicultural Parisian life 100 years ago.
