Work was good today!!!
Lastnight at church we discussed spiritual warfare, how we react to thoughts, putting on the full armor of God & some scriptures from Romans 8. That really helped me and i needed to hear that. We also wrote things down we’re struggling with and laid them at the cross we have in there to give it to Him. I had the sweetest interactions last night that i have felt nonstop grateful for. It really was so small but very unexpected and idk i felt so loved and those things helped motivate me and i felt like myself again and like i gained my confidence back. I walked into work today super happy with a smile on my face. I walked in with my friend & her mom and i told them how i rushed into work today bc our boss called me at 7:41 and i said i was glad to be there cause i wanted hours. Her mom was like “you’re getting attached to us” and i was like “oh i love y’all” and she goes “we love you too” i was like 🥹🥹. The kids were so sweet today and kept fighting over who was sitting in my lap LOL. We had 8 kids in the class today and half of them didn’t listen but it was fine…. I also got to see my fav church lady two times today. This morning i walked to see her as she was going into her office and she ran to hug me and called me sweet or something and i was like “i love you so much!!”. She’s wanting my mom & i to come to her house and hang out soon so that’ll be fun. I’m extremely tired today lol i challenged myself to see if i’d be ready to leave by 8:15 and somehow i was??? Lucky for me i packed my lunch lastnight cause i had a feeling i’d he coming in and i actually prayed to be able to work today and got to! Trying to get a lot of hours bc school ends on the 3rd week of May so i need hoursssss. But i’m gonna try and rest as much as i can this weekend - or at least that’s my goal. My job is so fulfilling!!!! Working with children makes my day and it’s so sweet when the other kids i don’t interact with much know my name and say hi to me and wanna talk to me like how precious can you possibly be???

Mid-Autumn 2018 Monthly Review
This is the August + half of September monthly review LOL. I really want to make the monthly reviews a thing but there’s always something on and this time I have a legit reason, which is... I started work!!!
It feels BIZARRE to have my own desk and feel like a company is actually investing in me for the long-term hahaha. Like if I don’t screw this up I could actually have a job and career like a normal person? WHAT IS LIFE
That said, I do quite eagerly leave my desk each day on time because my workload hasn’t quite grown enough that I’m fully occupied for the whole day, and sometimes the hours pass veryyy slowly. So yah my August monthly review was gonna be about my work anyway, and three weeks in I can give everyone (by everyone I mean the two people who read this blog hurhur) a better idea of how I find working life.
Such as... suddenly my evenings are super precious to me. AND, I can only choose one thing to do per evening, like whether I go out for dinner, or go workout, or go to crossfit, or go home and do admin (side note: i feel like life is 70% admin?? who agrees with me?). I can do any of those things but not ALL of those things. When I was unemployed I could do all those things in one day hahahaha. Nowadays it’s like picking my priorities and finding a balance that works for me. Again, I would love to hear from my friends who have been working far longer than I have about their own work-life balance and how they choose how to spend their free time. This week I went for crossfit once, worked out twice and went home twice. So overall I think this is kind of the balance I like. :)
Anyway I work around the Bugis area, and I budgeted $8 for work lunch but it’s actually really easy to find a lunch that costs less than that, bless me, so now I have lowered it to $7 but I’ve only spent $34 on work lunches in three weeks. This includes three days where I had catered food omg god bless catered food. HAHAHA I guess you can give me a salary but I will not stop being budget 😅 I may or may not have signed up for an event just to get a free lunch hehehehe
What else is suddenly precious to me? Getting enough sleep omg. I wake up at 6.40am so I have to sleep, ideally, at 10ish? I think my ideal amount of sleep is around 8 hours but not more than that. One night I slept too early and woke up with a sleep headache haha. Most of my nights I can go to sleep at a normal time but when I have crossfit I always end up coming home super late because I have dinner with a friend after the workout, so that’s me trying to fit two things in instead of one :(
My colleagues are okay, quite nice, and they’ve all been there for a few years at least, so I have alot to catch up on. Hmm I mostly go to lunch with them and they show me places to eat. Though I’ve noticed that two of them are quite conscious about their bodies and they keep making comments about getting “flabby” when they’re super slender lol ._.
Okay I am going to end my monthly review here. Shoutout to Sya who said she looks forward to these posts from me HAHA I hope this wasn’t a disappointment and all I talked about was work. This weekend I am going to watch some people play Overcooked and I am eating chirashi don and also I am doing pilates and hot yoga :D

A Company Review
So it’s been a month now since I quit my previous job. I want to talk about the company and some of the problems I saw.
I worked through a temp agency for Goya Foods. I was originally hired on to work doing DOT paperwork in a distribution warehouse. The day I started the girl doing payroll and commissions for our drivers quit... she herself had only been there a couple weeks. This should have been my first clue. I was then promoted to both working in the traffic department, doing payroll, and tracking all incoming invoices that needed to be approved. I was essentially the executive assistant to the manager.
The first three weeks were fine. I’m a fast learner and I caught on quick, but then the manager had some stress in his personal life and took it out on me and the other person in the traffic department. His behavior was that of a classic narcissist and I knew then I did not want to work directly under him any longer. But I digress. My boss was the main reason I left, but such a horrible boss doesn’t come into his position in a vacuum. He was a great salesman who knew the right people, but because he likely rubbed a few people the wrong way ended up managing a small warehouse instead of getting a job at corporate.
It’s more the company I now want to speak of. Some of this is likely because of my manager, but also in speaking with others in the company there are some practices that seem common everywhere. Like how myself and the others in the office were doing high level management tasks while only getting paid low end wages. I made probably the same as the traffic coordinator who had been there for nearly 8 years, and he was on call 24/7 if a driver needed something. This seems a regular occurrence that Goya would higher less qualified people and pay them a lower wage while slowly pilling onto their duties until they were taking jobs that they should be paid double for doing.
Then in our warehouse almost no one was an actual employee. The majority of the workers were hired through a temp agency like myself. When I asked around the excuse I was given was either they would be unable to pass the drug screen or the employees didn’t want to because of the cost of the insurance they would have to buy. Many of these workers had been there for years, yet still worked through the temp agency for extremely low wages. When I left I was making the same wage as the assistant night manager (as I saw what all the temps were making as I got the invoices). One of the warehouse workers who had been there since he was a kid only made $11/hr... If he put in that many years at fucking McDonald he’d be making more and probably would have been promoted.
That’s the thing Goya does though. It cultivates loyalty very well, both in employees and customers. Their products are good and the warehouse was clean, which is a source of pride. When I went to the corporate office for training we were spoiled with ordered in lunches and a very pricey dinner and drinks. I actually felt bad for leaving because I had grown to like some of the other managers and higher-ups... not enough to tolerate my manager’s shit. Even at our warehouse my boss would regularly buy jackets for warehouse employees and lunches. The Goya way seems to be to cultivate a love for the company while taking advantage of that love.
But while the warehouse and office workers may not get the best pay, the perks of management were astounding. My boss had a company paid for car (a BMW), yet they paid for him to get a rental car when he would travel. He regularly expensed meals that were in the hundreds of dollars and would come in and have lunch ordered for him and picked up by an employee, only to leave after he ate. I honestly don’t know if that man ever paid for his own lunch, and there was never any questioning of this by the company! I don’t know if this was normal with other managers, but I do know from stories that Goya had no problem throwing money around for the higher ups during meetings. Now I don’t have an issue with a company wining and dining their management. When my husband worked for GE he had a nice food allowance when he traveled, but they also paid a good wage even for those not at the management level.
I think this one review I found on Indeed sums up the company the best.
“Good for building skills not for long term. I’m not impressed with how the long term employees 25+ years are treated. No advancement and plenty of work. You don’t have much of a life outside of work. It seems the harder you work the less your appreciated. If you are not out spoken they will eat you alive or bombard you with work. However the brown noses are recognized more. Too much backstabbing. Not the family oriented company it used to be. Just get in and get out otherwise you waste your life away here. Pros: Great employee parties and picnics.”
Yeah, that sums it up nicely.
BTF Work Review / Self-Analysis
Yesterday’s work review has been beneficial on -mainly- two different level. One concerns my photographs and their relation to the audience. The other one concerns self-analysis; the session has indeed stimulated a self-reflection on my BTF project and on its photographic process. This blog post will discuss the second beneficial aspect of the work review.
What did I do to be bolder? Two months ago I limited myself to use daylight since I was scared of studio lighting. Look at me now: I’m producing a photographic series of self-portraits, set in the studio.
The session made me reflect on questions such as how did I translate my ideas into photographs? How did my research process develop? Which techniques do I use for the realisation of my images? What are the weaknesses and strengths of my work? How am I going to present my project in the gallery space? Which type of paper am I going to use for printing my pics? Which text-captions-introduction would be appropriate to the images?
In regards with my project evaluation, I will discuss my work in terms of its destination. In other words, where would my project fit? Is it more of an artistic work? Is it fashion? Is it editorial? Where would my project go? On a magazine or website? Somewhere else? Is my work a critique of fashion photography or contemporary art? Does my work represent a self-reflection on the fashion world? Which role does consumerism cover in my project?
My evaluation will approach fashion photography from a self-reflective prospect (viewpoint). Why do my images exploit the fashion language? I make use of the fashion language because nowadays commercial or fashion images attract viewers the most. Those type of images incorporate a myriad of subliminal messages, that involuntarily, play with the beholders’ mind and evoke their desires. I want my images to instantaneously communicate with their public. I want to create an immediate interconnection between the two.
