Weekly Look back #06
2/5/2016 – 6/5/2016
The final week was both the most eventful and possibly the least eventful in some ways when I look back at it. Quite a lot of the time was spent going back to continue editing on some clips while tweaking others several times to match, but despite that it was quite an effort to make sure everything would be completed on time with satisfaction.
I’m almost a little reluctant to leave even though the work is over, as it didn’t feel like six weeks had passed with how busy I ended up being in the end. Getting to use the equipment and experiment was very helpful when it came to inspiring some future creations, because now I know what, having practiced, it can do. Fablab is definitely somewhere I’d consider next year when it comes to my FYP, as I’d like o try and incorporate some physical construction into my work potentially and now I have a means by which to create more impressive pieces.
Overall I enjoyed my time at the Fablab, although there was minimal work truly relevant to my course in regards to animation and motion design. Despite that, I still feel like it was worth my time to go there and get the experience I’ve had, as practicing filmmaking and video production is something I feel will become useful to me in the future, especially if I dip more into productions for TV that involve live action sequences.
I was happy to hear that my time at the Fablab was beneficial for them to, as it would have felt terrible to pour so much effort into something for six weeks that ultimately ended up flopping, and it’s a relief to know we’re very much welcomed back at any time.

6/5/2016
Today was the final day, and given that the video was finished and we received positive notes from Mike and Ger about it, we were mostly left to our own devices to either do other work or ask questions we’d come up with during our time there. As a bit of a thank you, we purchased a card and some chocolates for both of them, and we were happy to hear that we were some of the first productive work experience students that they’d ever taken on, and we were the first to come in with a skill set that gave something back to them as we didn’t take up too much of their busier times and we were able to produce something they could use in the end in a trade-off for us getting to print what we liked for free when the machines were available.
It was a relief to hear such positive talk from them as I had hoped that what we were producing for them would be worth the wait and that we had the ability to satisfy a ‘client’ when it came to promotional materials and it seems like it did.
All in all, six weeks never went so fast.

5/5/2016
Today the last few touches were added to the video after another consultation with Ger. The main concern was making sure the licencing for the music was correct, as it appeared at first that the site we took it from had conflicting rules, but in the end we were able to confirm it was royalty free with proper credits and so we were able to put a small title in the video to do just that.
Once the video was finished, we handed both the finished movie file and the premier pro files to Ger for future reference and so it’s completed!

4/05/2016
Today was set for more editing of the footage as everything began to wind down in the last week, and as luck would have it, my laptop crashed first thing in the morning and I had to leave for an hour in the middle of the day to get it sent off ASAP for repair, but luckily having a second person with me on work experience means that the plans for the day could still continue and we were able to do more colour correcting on certain scenes and get them out of the way. The video now matches up colourwise for the most part without being too jarring, and the next bit of work is to ensure we have all the necessary parts included before the final render.

Work Experience Diary #26
3/05/2016
Today involved more editing of the footage to match it up better with the beat of the music and make sure the clips flow together nicely when viewed. A good point brought up by Ger when he saw the current state of the video was that there were clips in it featuring him and Javier, but nothing involving Mike who was the face of the Fablab. It just so happened that I took footage of Mike loading the Lasersur when he was showing us how to use it earlier on in the weeks, so it was easy to swap out a less favourable clip with that one so that all of the men involved in running the company are shown in some way in the footage. Lucky break!

As today is a bank holiday, the Fablab was closed and therefore I was not present for work experience.
Weekly Look back #05
25/04/2016 – 29/04/2016
This week was considerably less varied than other weeks due to the nature of the work being done. Lots of editing and pouring over music choices took up a lot of time, and while it produced interesting results, the lack of a solid finished piece at the end of it all was a little disappointing. Drawing up the 3D models for the boxes and then laser cutting them and putting them together felt very satisfying since I could go from idea to finished product within a few hours as long as the machine was free, but coming from that back to editing and playing with clips over and over did leave me feeling a little worn.
That, said, I have still enjoyed the feedback and constructive criticism that Mike and Ger have been giving us as it has left some opportunities open for more creative means of putting in text or timing clips for the video. The feedback also gives me more confidence that we’re on the right track for an end result that will make them, as the clients, happy and it has been great getting to work within the same building as them as the direct face-to-face chats have made it easier to flesh out ideas. I’m anticipating their reaction to the final result next week when the whole thing is put together and I can only hope that this six week experience will feel as worthwhile to them as it has for myself.
