FYI, Alan Lomax is one of the forefathers of modern oral history and ethnomusicology (and sometimes remixed by Greg Hale Jones).
And this one time, he visited an infamous prison plantation/"working farm" in Mississippi, and recorded prisoners who cried as they sang.
