Free, online word processor. The free GMX account comes with 2 GB of storage, and it does not appear that you can do real-time collaboration with this tool, but you are able to edit things via their email website or app.

Stored locally, but accessible online or via downloaded software, depending on which you choose. Does not allow for real-time collaboration. There are several word processors.

Free, online writing collaboration website. Founded in/based in Germany, and vocally opposed to generative AI. It is only in the browser, and from my experience, the mobile navigation is pretty good.

Etherpad 💝✒️🌐

An open-source project with many public instances you can use. Etherpad is more of a notetaking tool than a full word processor, but it allows for real-time collaboration.

Notetaking tool that allows you to organize many small notes in "vaults". Obsidian is stored locally, not on cloud.

HackMD 💝🌐

Notetaking tool that allows for cloud storage and real-time collaboration. It has formatting options for tables diagrams, and other useful tools. Allows for three collaborators on the free tier.

Notetaking webapp with local document storage (no real-time collaboration). Additional features are available with the macOS app ($13 one-time purchase), but it can be used in the browser on any device.

If anyone has any recommendations for an actual word processor app that:

- runs on iOS mobile, no browser-based editing/hosting

- is free (I’m literally broke)

- saves to local-storage, no forced cloud-storage

- doesn’t require an account or email signup

- doesn’t use Markdown formatting

- can be formatted as traditional document pages instead of a single continuous text box

- and is compatible with the iOS VoiceOver accessibility function (with or without the Screen Recognition mode enable [because none of these companies seem to care about visually impaired users haha— I really wish more people would talk about this issue 😬])

that would be very much appreciated… ;_;

Ok, so I've been using Ellipsus for a few months now and I thought I'd give out my thoughts on it as both a word processor, template guide and storage. @ellipsus-writes is their account on here and they often update with both dev notes and theme updates, as well as promoting other helpful information.

Overview

I absolutely adore Ellipsus and for anyone wanting to escape the hellscape of Google, please give it a try. It's very user friendly and the interface is sleek and comfortable! They don't have an official app yet, but the mobile web integration is still very comfortable to use and I've had no issue writing for long periods (Tho I don't recommend this. I gave myself carpal tunnel writing about 10,000 words in a week just on my phone, so don't be dumb like me.)

The templates are so nice to just have right there and it's super helpful if you need it to help you get started. I personally don't use them a whole lot unless I'm struggling with a character's motivations, but they're still very nice to have when I feel like reaching for one.

I haven't tried out their AO3 direct upload integration yet, since I switch from Ellipsus to LibreOffice often, (and I usually write my fic chapters all in one place) so I don't know if it would post the whole fic or just a chapter. I haven't messed with it as I've said before.

I'll do a read more when I go into more of the in-depth stuff. I'll be discussing some of my critiques and hangups with it, though there aren't a whole lot. (Also, please keep in mind that it's still actively being built and still has massive amounts of functionality despite these critiques, so don't dismiss it quite yet).
