haven't done staining in ages, decided risking a mix of walnut and chestnut stains and my camera lighting absolutely DOES NOT do it justice!! the walnut is this earthy golden brown and chestnut is slightly cooler and they make such a good contrast together. not entirely happy with the carving itself but after a months long break I just think it's nice enough

I began noodling on this media room project in early 2020 and bought the walnut and curly maple on March 14, 2020 - 3 days before our world changed (got in before the price of lumber skyrocketed!) And, it’s kept me busy for the past 18 months. I learned a ton. First time trying handcut mitered dovetails, and did it on all four carcasses. First time doing any kind of dovetails on something this big. First time working with veneer. Built a veneer vacuum press to do it. 20 mitered doors with claro veneer panels, 16 of them with fiddly knife hinges. Eight dovetailed drawers. 18 double-bridle jointed legs. Walnut, maple and cedar from @fine_lumber_austin. Claro walnut veneer from @gobywalnut. Hardware from @blum_usa, @brussohardware and @whitechapel.ltd. Inspiration from everyone on Ig and long playlists featuring Tweedy, Wayne Coyne and John Prine. The Covid project is done, and so should be Covid. I think that’s fair.

One of my cousins volunteered to bring this desk to me from his late mother's house. All four of her children are working on clearing the house out and getting it ready to sell this summer. I was beyond delighted when I was offered this desk. I can remember Grandpa making it for Grandma, and it was probably the thing in their house I was most fond of. He was a very, very oldschool woodworker, but he made some unusual choices for this piece. Darker wood with more pronounced grain used in one place, the front drawers. The base of the desk is painted, while all the other wood is varnished. It all works, though; I know I'm biased but that is one hell of an artistic piece of furniture.

The paintings are random little scenes from the middle ages. Stubborn donkey doesn't want to cross a bridge? Why not, I guess.
Random dinner and desk
I've been a big fan of 'roast dinners' for a while now, but this is just the BEST:
Potato, sweet potato (or carrot), brocolli, and some type of sausage. So good. So easy. It does take about 50 minutes in the oven on 400F/ 200C. Yesterday was chilly and rainy, so a good day for a hot dinner.
I got word recently from one of my cousins that they were willing to let me have one desk from my late aunt's house. My grandfather made it for my grandmother; it is possibly his finest piece. Since she and I shared a first name, I always hoped to inherit it one day. And now, circuitously, I may have!
