I uh…
Ok so I’m a little nervous making this post because I rarely get involved in or bring up fandom discourse. And if I do it’s kept in comments instead of actual posts/ reblogs so there’s some bit of privacy.
But I really think we should all collectively be more careful about using the word “woobify” while talking about a show where the main theme is deconstructing toxic masculinity.
It is not “woobifying” or “infantalizing” Ed to acknowledge that some of his actions are informed by trauma. Ed is one of the few characters out there that might actually meet the requirements for complex ptsd and I think that’s important to acknowledge in analysis of the show. At the very least I think more eyebrows should be raised by the implication that being affected by it would make him cutesy or lessen his accomplishments in piracy.
I’ve heard it said the idea of Ed being intimidated by Izzy in this scene is “woobifying” him. I don’t think it is. I think it’s acknowledging that he’s in an extremely vulnerable state emotionally and is wired to jump to fight or flight even when the situation doesn’t quite warrant it. I’ve definitely seen plenty of loved ones misinterpret or overemphasize a situation and react out of fear as a trauma response. Let’s not make actual people with these experiences feel like children or idiots ok?
I mostly see accusations of woobifying, infantalizing, etc in conjuncture with “Izzy did nothing wrong actually” or “Izzy in no way provoked Ed” which is uh… flawed and best and problematic at worst. I’m sorry but Izzy abso-fucking-lutely hurt Ed in several ways. He made it so Ed almost had to watch Stede die in front of him TWICE, eventually succeeded in separating them, then had the audacity to degrade him for trying to mourn this loss in a healthy way. Guys. These are objectively toxic things to do to a person. I don’t like when people say it’s woobifying Ed to acknowledge Izzy hurt him because it implies the mere act of being victimized makes you weak and less than.
I have never seen a take complaining of woobifying Ed that doesn’t imply he’s stupid/ a monster for not having the most morally perfect and appropriate reaction. It insinuates that only dumb or childish people can be hurt or manipulated, and y’all that is such a bad take.
I also think the term woobifying comes dangerously close to the word emasculating, and I think that’s very interesting when it’s being used most often while critiquing analysis of a scene where a gay man is being berating for essentially “losing his manliness” (over the loss of a romantic partner no less). I think calling Ed’s canon desire for softness “woobifying Blackbeard” and ignoring how how his past experiences have negatively shaped his thought process completely misses the point of deconstructing what it means to be a man.
ohh ian grimm i am going to dig so deep into your psyche
woobifying evil characters is out
Making sweet and innocent characters into unredeemable horrendous villains is in
i reject your shitty headcanons that pennywise has any sort of moral center

What would be considered to be “woobifying” Izaya’s character?
my sweet little yum yum. my darling little yip yip. my stinky little scrorp barhk groolp. my male adult normal man. my foul, wretched thing. my baby coo-coo sweetie baby pie. my lovecraftian cosmic horror beyond natural comprehension. my stupid little imbecile. my unsavoury little scrungle. my ĘÊƏĖěEē... my revolting little plague. my adorable little coochycoo. my HHHHhhHggGHbbbbbb. my gnostic little deity. my blorbin' little blorbius. my meow meow. my muse. my sweet baby.
Hey I don't wanna cause an argument or anything but I'm so fucking done with people criticizing others for liking og Elias. This show is my coping mechanism(hyperfixation) and I really like og Elias and Jonah Magnus as characters. Characters. Jonny and Alex have said it's up to interpretation, what lense of metaphor you want to see the show through. It's completely valid to see it through that lense but I just want to listen to a funky podcast about monsters and interesting characters. Don't judge people for wanting to like that part of the show. You have your interpretation, we have ours, neither is right or wrong and neither is bad for liking it.
