#WonderWeekender 15/16th Feb
Firstly, I hope you all had a sweet Valentine’s Day yesterday! Did you manage to catch our video message? http://youtu.be/1IU-E8MQlKw Valentine’s Day will always be even more special to me as I proposed to my wife on Valentine’s!! Total cheeseballs right? Yeah well I did it so whatevs.
Well I’m writing this morning from #WünderFanβ Thilo and Susanna’s house near Frankfurt. We’re over here hanging out, drinking some beer, eating some schnitzel and on a scouting mission for a potential #WonderTour in Germany in the Autumn!!
We’re quite some way off from packing our bags just yet... But this first step – staking out suitable venues and establishing links with local promoters – is a massively important one!! #WonderWeekender
In The Wondersmiths, we’re all about ‘Work hard – play hard’... And this weekend we are going to be doing just that!
6am Saturday morning, when you’re all tucked up in your beds, fast asleep, and dreaming about some friends from back in school, your boss at work and your Grandma partying together on a boat made out of jelly, whilst you’re trying to revise for a test that you sat 4 years ago... We shall be making our way to the woods at Sharpenhoe Clappers to film our music video for ‘Insignificant’!
It’s going to be cold, but we know that #WonderTime is the best time – intensified by the addition of husband and wife filmmakers Sarah and Ian White, along with Oli’s ‘roady’ dad #PapaJohn Franklin!
Chris and I got together a few weeks ago to write a story board:
But we’re happy to see what we can come up with on the day, apparently #Pulp’s #JarvisCocker only choreographed his infamous dance to ‘Common People’ on the day
...and if it’s alright for him, it’s alright for us!

Following on from our early start, we’re looking towards a late finish: headlining Go Bowling in Dunstable for Spark Entertainment’s first show of the year.
We’ve never played at a bowling alley before, and I gotta admit, after the gig, I am most looking forward to playing in the arcade and drinking a blue Slush Puppie!!

On Being The Bass Player...
If the drums are the foundations and the guitars are the bricks and mortar, then the bass section probably constitutes the tertiary structural beams secluded somewhere in the walls; only the architect knows they’re there, and your house will probably stand up just fine without them, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, right?
As a bass player you’ll never be Hendrix - you’ll never even come close; you’ll be the electric guitar’s malformed third-cousin, the slightly underperforming twin, the kid who was made to play softball at school because he was too fat to play rugby... but that’s fine. As a bass player, you can sit back in a swathe of comfortable and humble self-confidence, albeit in a dark damp corner of the stage, with an assertive knowledge that while your lead guitarist stands front-centre with one foot on the foldback, screeching wailing tones and pulling faces from a distasteful 70’s porno, it is in fact YOU that’s making everyone’s feet tap, heads bob, and smile. You’re the cool one, and you don’t even know it.
However, if like me you’re the kind of bass player who can’t quite shake off the self-indulgent musical masturbationalism of great guitarists such as Slash, Jimmy Page, and Clapton, it will be a welcome salvation to hear that all is not lost. You need look no further than the likes of Jaco Pastorius and Bootsy Collins to unearth a jazzy swagger that’s been buried in the footnotes of the job description since you signed for it. Take solace in the fact that while anyone can pick up a guitar and play the first four chords from any (and every) Jack Johnson song round a campfire and look like a douchebag doing it, you’ll be safe in your bubble of low-end individualism - you’re bigger than that. The simple truth is that four strings are better than six, and while all guitars are equal, some are more equal than others.

Why I use a click track.
Many of you have probably seen me on stage with my noise cancelling earphones in, and as much as it might look like it, I can assure you I’m not just listening to my favourite tracks to warm up for the gig, I am instead listening to the maddening clacking sound that is the metronome. I have up until this point for our practise and stage shows borrowed Dave’s phone and used his metronome app, needless to say this procedure was starting to irritate Dave…about 6 months ago. So I thought this was an issue I should at last address. If you don’t know what a metronome is (pictured below), it’s basically a little box that makes a clicking noise to keep drummers without a sense of time (like myself) on point when it comes to leading the rest of the band at the right tempo.
This might seem a bit unusual to a lot of drummers out there, as throughout the years most drummers that I’ve encountered have relied on their own sense of time to keep the band together. This was something the Oli of times gone by also used to do. The first time I played our music to a set click track was my first time in a studio with the guys, recording one of our verrrry old tracks ‘Never Stops’ (A song we decided to recently re-write, that will be entering your ears at venue near you). The problem I faced in the studio was time keeping, I had such a horrible and embarrassing time falling out of sync with the rest of the band take, after take, after take. After a few more trips to the studio I finally started to get the hang of the click tracks and the more we recorded the better I got. It was a relief, but in my relief I immediately faced a new, bigger problem…gigs. My time keeping at gigs was never bad but where we were now a very tight studio band there was a definite dip in our live performance quality. So I decided enough was enough, I wasn’t going to be responsible for letting our live performance down, so I saved up some money and brought the best pair of ‘Shure’ noise cancelling headphones I could find. Unfortunately after blowing the budget on those, I could only afford a pretty cheap metronome with what was left. As you’d expect that broke pretty damn quickly and so I eventually switched to using Dave’s phone app. Since then Dave has begged and pleaded with me to find my own. The issue that has kept setting me back was finding one that I could pre-set the tempo for each track of our set list on. Dave’s phone worked, but to change tempo I’d have to mess about with a touch screen wheel in between tracks wasting precious performance time! So I needed one that could have tempos programmed in, that could be switched between with one tap and that was affordable. Well as it turned out, that doesn’t exist, the cheapest one I could find that did this pretty basic function was £70, so I kissed my Christmas money good bye and made the sacrifice for my beloved band mates! So next time you come down to watch The Wondersmiths play I hope you’ll notice that we’re exactly 70 pounds more in time than we were the last time you saw us! And to you drummers out there…our profession is not a cheap one, so get saving while you can! WonderLove guys! – Oli x
