Robert Mamentaug his marke
The mark of Robert Mamentaug (also spelled Momontaug or Momentauge) seen here on a deed for land from so-called Boston, south to present day Roxbury, Massachusetts and including Deer Island. Dated 1684.
Momontaug is identified as a counselor to Josias Wampatuck, or “Charles Josias alias Josias Wampatuck soñe and Heire of Josias Wampatuck late Sachem of the Indians Inhabiting the Massachusets in New England and Grandson of Chicatabut the Former Sachem…” Though we have yet to find out more information about Robert Momontaug, it can be presumed that Momontaug, as with Wampatuck, had ties to land at Mattakeeset, Neponset, Ponkapaug and Wessagusset - areas south and slightly west of present-day Boston, Massachusetts.
This document is referred to as a quitclaim deed for the peninsula of Boston, Massachusetts. Signed March 19, 1684. Seen at the Massachusetts Historical Society.
