Daily Waypoint | N 42° 39' 33.2" W 70° 36' 53.3" Rockport Harbor Motif #1—Motif Number 1, located on Bradley Wharf in the harbor town of Rockport, Massachusetts, is a replica of a former fishing shack well known to students of art and art history as "the most often-painted building in America." The original structure was built in 1840 and destroyed in the Blizzard of 1978, but an exact replica was constructed that same year. Built in the 1840s as Rockport was becoming home to a colony of artists and settlement of fishermen, the shack became a favorite subject of painters due to the composition and lighting of its location as well as being a symbol of New England maritime life. Painter Lester Hornby (1882–1956) is believed to be the first to call the shack "Motif Number 1," a reference to its being the favorite subject of the town's painters, and the name achieved general acceptance. Rockport is a seaside town in Essex County, Massachusetts. This Burger King is very unlike most of the other 15,000-plus on Earth. It’s so special it deserves a historic plaque. That’s because this restaurant in Quincy, Massachusetts is one of only two known surviving Burger Kings that feature this sleek midcentury glassbox design. Swipe to see the other one, which is in Naperville, Illinois. I featured that one on my feed last month. The one in Naperville still has its rooftop arches and vintage signage, whereas the building in Quincy has lost some of that historic detail. This location skipped the 1970s shingle overhaul, and so far has avoided the bland-box treatment that now houses most of these restaurants. You invariably get questions from people when they see you taking pictures. A man driving by yelled out, “Are they tearing it down?” The concern in his voice betrayed his love for this survivor. I assured him that I was from out of town and just taking photos of this gem. When I finally stepped inside, the cashier asked me why I was taking photos. And I explained all of this to her. She seemed to get a kick out of the idea of working in a historic structure. Like Downey in Southern California, Quincy has vintage fast-food pedigree. Quincy is the hometown of the first Dunkin’ Donuts, and also features one of the oldest surviving Dairy Queen signs (now Dairy Freeze), an Eskimo girl, that I posted recently. When I came to town, I wasn’t expecting to find this Burger King.
