This post will be markedly different in that it will have nothing to do with cheese. That's right. No cheese whatsoever beyond these first few sentences....
In that case, what am I going to talk about? Coding.
Will it be interesting? Depends on if you think the apps on your smartphone are wonders of the modern age.
Will you get lots of info? I hope I can provide you with some serious resources in case you want to dabble yourself.
Is it fun? If you like problem solving, coding can be so much fun! I love just hanging out with a few people and discussing code. We aren't professionals, but that doesn't mean we don't do awesome things!
Now that I'm done with my list, I am going to move on to the meat and potatoes of this post! So far in my coding career, I've gone from not knowing how to write a function in javascript to writing a fairly clear, non-object oriented game of Blackjack in just under three weeks.
Does it work? Yes. Could it be better? Yes. Will I try again? Probably not. I have little interest in Blackjack beyond a small show of skill. I'm getting into this biz to do something that helps people and playing a counting game against a computer just doesn't seem groundbreaking to me. Right now I'm actually building the framework for my own blog. Fancy, huh? I have chosen this project for two reasons: First, building my own blog is awesome and a definite ego boost. Second, it incorporates bits and pieces of coding lore that I will need for future projects.
A good way to start is to check out code school, codecademy, udacity and just writing bits of code independently. Sublime text is very useful for independent dabbling.
If you're a woman and looking for support, check out meetup.com and look for a group near you. I've attended a few events put on by groups such as Girl Develop It and have found the community to be very supportive. I definitely recommend checking out what the internet has to offer, messing around and attending meetups. Those simple steps are great ways to get into coding!
