No, it wasn't supposed to be antagonistic, and of course you can be sad about it, but healthy rivalry is just a new add to their already strong relationship that won't break. I like to look at the positive sides, while they were also crying they were also excited because they are so proud of each other and can't wait to see the other play on the other side of the net.
