What pisses me off about the Cheryl shit is people are justifying her actions cause Fangs and Sweet Pea were being sexist... Look they were being little shits. But Cheryl and the gang were going to look to beat them up cause Cheryl was mad that Jughead insulted the gang. Insulted her. She wasn't trying to smash patriarchy by dealing with people just harassing women and being sexist. *SIGHS*.
Cheryl, as a rule, never does anything that she doesn’t benefit from. Even if it’s for someone else, in the end, she definitely gets something out of it. That’s not feminism no matter how you dress it. Her having her “gang” beat up two boys who were not going to fight back is, in a nutshell, a violent attack. Assault. She is an unstable person in general.
Yes, she’s had a bad home life and yes, she’s been traumatized. But, and here’s the important thing, they all have.
Archie’s been hunted down, put in juvie, his ex-gf’s dad would like him dead, he got attacked by a bear and a shady farm girl. Veronica’s parents are criminals who are dealing drugs and murdering people while also trying to control everything around them. Jughead’s been: abandoned, homeless, sort of accused of murder, beaten up, manipulated until he joined a gang with the intentions of keeping the town from going to war, to which he also got beaten up for his troubles, snapped a little, is currently living with the knowledge that he helped cover a murder up because his gf’s mom is nuts, almost got murdered, is trying to run a gang, had to get rid of another dead body, his dad is an alcoholic and his mom is a drug dealing criminal who would use him faster than she’d blink at this point.
Betty. Oh, Betty. Our Betty-boo. Aside from the sky high expectations of her mother, she’s dealing with anxiety bad enough to cause self-harm. She’s been stalked, manipulated, emotionally tortured, her friends keep betraying her, she’s had to cover up a murder for her crazy af mom, she’s been threatened, she gets blamed for damn near everything, and turns out, her dad is a serial killer who did most of the stuff to her who also planned to kill her too. And in the end? She’s living a mom and sister so messed up, she’s seeking him out to have some sort of normalcy in her life. Oh, and that’s when her mom isn’t stealing her money, almost dying in front of her as her sister does nothing, then saying they’re all going to live in the cult together. And that’s after her own mother had her committed to an asylum. You know, as parents do.
So, ahem, while Cheryl’s life hasn’t been roses and glitter, she’s not suffering worse than everyone else. She likes chaos. She likes hell raising. She likes it. She makes it clear. She enjoys her own behavior. If she wasn’t dating Toni, she’d still feel the same about the Serpents as before. Which is, not giving a fuck. To say otherwise is…well, willful ignorance.
Did Sweet Pea and Fangs say something stupid? Yes. Were they going to be beaten up no matter what they said? Yes. Cheryl had a plan before they opened their mouths. She wanted to send a message to Jughead because she’s a selfish person who thrives off the drama she creates for other people. Cheryl does what Cheryl wants because Cheryl wants it.
And, to be honest, the show uses sexist and misogynistic remarks to justify violence perpetrated by women. It’s a bad look. I would love to smash the patriarchy but being violent and calling it feminism is, well, gross, and not at all what feminism is about.
Oof, that was long. Sorry for the ramble but there you go, friend. It was gross and gratuitous and if you can flip the sitch and it’s wrong, it’s wrong on all accounts, so no thanks on that, Riverdale. Thanks for the ask!
