Breath of Fresh Air Chapter 3: Of Bounty and Bonding
Wolves POV
Midna was laying by Rutile Lake, smirking at the water patiently. A few moments later, Link burst forth from the surface with a flailing fish in his jaws. He looked absolutely delighted.
Midnaâs body shook with laughter, her tail wagging. âBravo, bravo!â She cheered amidst her own chuckling. âForgive me for doubting you, Link!â
The green wolf heaved himself out of the water, spitting the fish onto the grass in front of her. âI told you, Iâve had plenty of experience with wilderness survival by this point!â He replied before shaking himself off, sending wet droplets everywhere.
The Twili wolf raised a paw to block a drop from hitting her face. She was still smirking at him. âIâm no expert, but do real wolves even eat fish?â She inquired, looking down at the floundering creature before her. She wouldnât turn down a meal, not when heâd went through all the trouble to get it for her, but she couldnât help but be curious.
âUh, I donât think so, but weâre not exactly typical wolves.â He replied, wagging his tail back at her. His fur had fluffed up now that heâd gotten all the water out.
Midna giggled again at the sight. âYou look like a plush toy.â She commented, poking his forehead with a claw.
He rolled his eyes. âYeah, well thatâs whatâs bound to happen when youâre covered in fur.â He said in response before turning to look at a nearby tree. âYou into fruit?â
She raised a brow before following his gaze. The tree in question was bearing a trio of Durians. The fruit was yellow, covered in spikes. She turned her gaze back to the other wolf. âUh, not too much of it in the Twilight, but sure, I wouldnât be opposed.â
Link nodded, pacing over to the Durian tree. He clenched his jaws, allowed the orange energy to build, and then released it with a bark, breaking through one of the branches and allowing the fruit attached to fall to the ground. He repeated the action twice more, and soon there were three fruit-bearing branches on the ground. He turned back to Midna with pride in his posture.
The wolf in question widened her eyes at the display. âWoah! Since when did you know how to do that?â She inquired, standing up and pacing over to his side.
His tail wagged proudly. âI learned plenty of neat tricks after I got to the Twilight. I mean, itâd be wrong for the heir to the Twilight Throne to not have the array of magic that his people do.â He replied with a wink.
Midna blushed a little. âOh yeah, I forgot that I made that decree. Uh, how did you take that, by the way?â
Link squinted. âUh, no one bothered to tell me until recently, but just as well as everything else. Terribly.â
âOh. Uh, sorry.â She replied, looking down awkwardly before picking up one of the branches in her teeth.
He rubbed the side of her face with his own. âDonât feel bad, Iâm over it now. Iâm good, youâre here, and we have this entire lakeside to ourselves.â He turned back and went to pick up the fish heâd caught. It was still flopping about, but Link took a moment to bite down a bit harder and it stopped. He bounded ahead of his friend and stopped inside the skull-cave.
Midna, unable to respond with the branch in her mouth, just settled for following him into their temporary abode.
Link had set the fish down with the collection of other meats heâd collected beforehand, smiled at Midna, and went about starting a fire. Heâd already collected enough firewoodâŚhe just needed to light it. Without thumbs. Hm.
Midna set down the branch and raised a brow at him. âUh, you need help there? Do we even need to cook any of this stuff? We are wolves.â She pointed out.
He pouted. âI mean, yeah, but as a former human I like to think Iâm better than that.â He scrunched his face at the pile of wood. âI donât think the magic I used earlier is flammable, is it?â
âNope.â
âWell then.â He brainstormed for a moment, then sighed. âGuess I gotta do this the easy way, then.â He mumbled with a pout.
Before Midna had a chance to question the statement, Linkâs body was cloaked in shadow. His silhouette shifted before her, and soon enough he was a biped once more.
The Twili wolf blushed profusely, but Link paid it no mind, opting to instead stick his hand into his shadow and pull forth a Fire Arrow. He crouched before the wood pile, cleared his throat, and said, âYou, uh, might wanna stand back.â
Midna backed away, and in one swift motion, Link slammed the arrowhead into the middle of the pile. He hopped back himself as a small burst of flame followed. Smiling proudly and brushing his hands off, he sat down and set about attempting to peel a Durian.
The wolf approached him, cautious yet curious. With her teeth, she picked up a corner of the cloak he wore. She gave him an incredulous look.
He glanced back at her sheepishly. âY-yeah, the other Twili gave it to me, s-sorry. Did you, uh, want it back?â
She let it go, shaking her head at him before sitting down and gesturing to herself with a paw.
He nodded in understanding. âAh, yeah, still a wolf. What about later, when you figure out how to change back?â He inquired, stabbing the hard outer shell of the fruit with a sharp stone.
She did her best shrugâŚbefore standing up again and pacing over to him.
He raised an eyebrow. âHm?â
She gently placed a paw on his arm, making him set the Durian down. Her eyes twinkled with awe, staring deep into his own with an intensity he had never seen.
He found himself getting a bit flustered, and reflexively shifted back into a wolf, causing them both to topple over.
âM-midna, are you ok?â He managed to say, having a hard time breathing with her on top of him.
She sputtered nervously, removing herself from him and sitting a little ways away. Her ears were flat, her tail wrapped around herself, and while she didnât look guilty, she did look nervous. âI-I justâŚrealized how long its been since Iâve seen you as a humanâŚâ She whispered. She gave a small smile as she looked back up at him. âYouâre just as handsome as I rememberâŚthough you do look a little pale.â
He laughed, blushing a little. âH-hey! Itâs not my fault there isnât much natural light in the Twilight! Forgive me for not retaining a tan, haha!â He retorted with a grin as he got back up.
She approached him again, grinning. âFor the record, though, feel free to keep the cloak. It looks good on you~â She remarked, completely serious despite her teasing tone.
His heart beat hard in his chest, and he continued to beam brightly, before coughing and turning his gaze back to the impaled fruit on the ground. âUh, should I turn back and finish that, orâŚ?â
âNah, seems more trouble than itâs worth, honestly.â She replied. She turned the other way, towards their pile of assorted meats. âHowâre we gonna cook those, then?â
âUhâŚâ Link trailed off for a moment before offering, ââŚsharp stick? Skewer? Perhaps?â
Midna rolled her eyes with a smirk. âWell, I donât have any better ideas!â
Later in the evening, the pair sat side-by-side, sharing the fruits of their labor. Metaphorical fruits, anyway â they never got around to skinning the Durian.
Bits of bone and other remains of their meal littered the ground around them. Link was still gnawing on a particularly large bone.
Midna sighed, resting her chin against the dirt. âReal question here, do you even know how to teach me to turn back into my true form or are you just gonna have to wing it?â
Lkink dropped the bone. âUh, well, Iâve never had to teach anyone before, soâŚâ
She snorted. âWinging it it is then, ok.â
âI mean, for me I just have to visualize the balance of light and dark within me? But I donât think thatâll work with you, cuz, you know, youâre just a Twili with two forms now, I think.â
Midna hummed in response. âThatâs fair. Iâm fine with waiting for now, butâŚâ
He raised an eyebrow at her. âBut?â
âBut I wanna, like, hug you, you know? With arms. And I canât do that until I turn back.â She said with a pout.
He sighed. âYeah, I get it.â He looked down at her and rested his head at her side. âI promise, Midna, I will do my best to teach you to shift. I swear, Iâll figure it out.â He vowed, sincerity in his voice.
She chuckled at him, nudging him with her nose. âDonât get too sentimental on me now!â She hesitated for a moment before licking his cheek. âFor now, Iâm fine with just being able to be here with you.â
He blushed, wagging his tail. He supposed he could survive a little bit longer like this, as long as she was there with him.
Gonna mayyybe start posting back in this tumblr. Don't get your hopes up tho
Anyhow have that one old midna wolf painting I made a while back
Breath of Fresh Air Chapter 1: Recuperation
Wolves pov
It was early morning. A faint mist hung in the air, each blade of grass dotted with dew. The shadow of Satori Mountain left the forest cool and shaded. Animals frolicked about, placid and happy. The forests around the mountain had that kind of aura to them; here, there was protection and peace.
Well, everything was peaceful until a pair of unusual wolves entered the peripherals of just about every creature with a sense of smell. After a brief moment of staring, the wildlife collectively bolted, seeking out safer areas devoid of fang-bearing predators.
The wolves barely noticed the fright they caused. They were far too busy catching up.
âCan I just say again that I have no idea how to walk like this?? How in the Twilight did you managed to adapt so fast?â Said the taller of the two, who was stumbling a bit on her new paws. She was primarily a deep, dark blue color, though a mane of bright orange tumbled its way down her back; it ended within her tail, which was almost entirely the same orange color. Some sort of plate was stationed on her forehead, with a ruby and strange etchings indented into it. On her legs and stomach, a few runic markings in bright teal were present.
The other wolf, green and brown in color, laughed. âIt isnât too hard once you get the hang of it, Midna. Maybe itâs because I was blessed or something. I donât remember struggling but perhaps thatâs just due to living so long already. Thereâs a lot of random stuff I donât remember.â He replied with a wag of his tail.
Midna rolled her eyes at him. âWell, I donât have as many years to sort through, so I guess Iâll have to be your fact-checker.â She said with a smirk.
Link looked down at the forest floor, quietly smiling to himself. He didnât reply to her statement outwardly.
The Twili Wolf sighed. âSoâŚâ
He looked up at her. âSoâŚ?â
She looked up at the trees, watching the morning light filter down through the canopy. âItâs so strange to me, being alive right now. I mean, I died. I actually, literally died. And, now that doesnât matter? And Iâm also a wolf? Wild, right?â
âDoesnât matter??â Link sputtered at her. âDo you not realize how many years I had to go without you before my heart could accept that you were dead?â He frowned.
Midna looked down at him guiltily. âThatâs, thatâs not what I meant, Link! I meanâŚat least now, I get a second chanceâŚâ She sighed, ââŚto apologize, apologize for what I put you through.â
The green wolf didnât respond, his ears flat against his head.
âI know, I know that maybe itâll be hard to forgive me, for not telling you. But I just couldnât bear the thought of having that conversationâŚâ She winced a little at the memory. âI hadnât known you were immortal, I didnât think youâd have much longer, since I was going toâŚyou know, kick the bucket. I didnât thinkâŚâ
Midna looked over at him, sorrow evident in her eyes. âIâm so, so sorry, Link. I shouldâve told you I was dying. Thereâs no excuse for keeping it from you. Iâm sorry.â
He sighed, looking up at her with acceptance. âHonestly, Iâm not mad anymore. I was so angry when I found out, but only at myself for being too late. And the dragons, for making me immortal in the first place. Which is something I knew, so itâs kinda my fault too, because I didnât say anything about that to you, either.â He sat down and curled his tail around his feet. âMidna, weâve both had a long road to get to this point, and I donât think either of us have said everything we want to say, soâŚâ He held out his paw to her. âCan you promise me that, from this point, weâll make a point to be honest with each other? IâŚyouâre very important to me, and I donât want anything to keep us apart again, not after how much it took to get you back.â
Midna blinked, and then laughed her familiar, high-pitched laugh. It sent a nostalgic chill down Linkâs spine. She put her paw on his, and smiled. âI can agree to that, Mr. hero. Wouldnât want to let my old partner go it alone for another hundred years. We all know how bad you are at being alone~â She snickered playfully.
He huffed, puffing out his cheeks indignantly. âHey, Iâm great at being alone!â
âOh, Iâm sorry, I thought I was talking to the guy that literally had to find himself for company.â
He opened his mouth to refute her, but then just awkwardly closed it again when no rebuttal could be made. Â
She giggled. âWhat, no sarcastic retort? I thought you were full of divine fire! Or did it all burn out as you were running from me?â
Link cocked his head to the side. âWhat are you talking about? Do you mean all those dreams? Because you were definitely the one fleeing in those.â
Her ears flattened a little. âUh, thatâs not how I remember it happening.â
âWait, you remember? You mean, that whole time I was dreaming of those lights, it was you the whole time? Not just when the dragons brought you back?â
She nodded. âDefinitely. It was likeâŚIâd been sleeping since my death, and all of a sudden, I was awake. And you were there. So I chased after you, because you wouldnât stop running. Only times I could catch up were when you stopped at those weird spring places. Those dragons were the only ones that could stall you for even a little.â
Link looked at her incredulously. âI thought they were giving me strength or something, and thatâs why you were closer. Are you telling me the only reason we got closer was because I stopped for two seconds?â
Midna smirked. âYeah, pretty much. You were overthinking things a little, Link. But, what else is new?â
He returned her smirk with one of his own. âWhen have I ever done that?â
She put a paw to her chin and gazed down at him mischievously. âI donât know, why donât you ask all the skulls you moved around pointlessly in Arbiterâs Grounds? Or that fortune teller who ripped you off?â She replied, absolutely full of snark.
His tail fluffed up defiantly, and a blush spread over his fur. He didnât seem mad, though. âHey! No fair! I donât remember any dirt on you! The ribbing needs to be mutual, Midna!â
âRrreaaaalllly? I thought youâd have every detail committed to memory, lover boy. Since Iâm sooooo important to you~â She did a pose, albeit an unnatural one. She still wasnât quite used to her wolf anatomy.
His ears fell a little, and he still looked quite flustered. âI-I do, I just donât remember you doing anything unnecessarily bad. Youâre justâŚa great personâŚwho means a lot to me, and I love you-â He cut himself off, blushing profusely.
Midnaâs heart skipped a beat, and she looked over at him, cheeks puffed out. Her tail wagged involuntarily, but she payed it no mind. She scooted over to him, plopping herself down at his side. She nuzzled the side of his face, blushing a little herself. âI missed you, Link. I missed this.â
Link laughed, still blushing but smiling about it now. âWhat do you mean, youâve been dead!â
âWell we still spent, like 50 years or so talking but not being able to actually be with each other! I had plenty of time to miss you, you dork!â
Link stood up at that, hopping a distance away and raising his haunches. The pinnacle of playful dog poses. âHey, weâre near one of the kidâs favorite places in Hyrule! I gotta show you, itâs the prettiest lake!â
Midna snorted, getting to her feet. âPrettier than the fishing spot with all the cherry blossoms?â
The other wolf paused, not changing his position. ââŚsecond prettiest lake.â
âHeheh! Lead the way, fluff-butt.â
