The Ukmergė Wolf Maiden

Ukmergė, once known as Vilkmergė, is a town nestled in the heart of Lithuania that has been through more than many of the towns I frequent ever have… However, what makes this place stand out to me is the Wolf Maiden (This is referenced in the former name of the town, Vilk meaning wolf, and Merge meaning maiden). 

I’m still researching… but some of the stories regarding this seem to vary.  Some indicate that the woman shown here was a girl raised by wolves.  Another says she was a priestess who lived in the dark forest and could drive attacking wolves away.  But another describes her as a witch who obeyed the kings of the forest, even if those kings happened to be wolves.

If the girl pictured here was raised by wolves, she’d symbolically bridge the gap between mankind and nature.  Thus, feral children, particularly those raised by wolves are often brought up in books concerning such legendary figures as werewolves; after all, if anything bridges the gap between man and beast, a werewolf does.  If she is instead a witch who can control wolves, then she’s very similar to a vargamor, something else that also appears in my studies.  Thus, as a werewolf fan, this twenty-four year old statue is not only beautiful, but it is also incredibly fascinating.  If I ever manage to somehow end up at the Pivonijos market, I would certainly have to visit it, probably after having a Vilkmerges beer.
