PELAGIC SEAWING HEADCANONS

when i say "subspecies" they are very closely related and can still interbreed, think more like dog-breeds kinda in how they can reproduce w/ eachother than something like wolves and dogs; they are subspecies but act like dog-breeds individual variety does happen too between these subgroups, not all will look exact to these examples (they arent canon characs shown or ocs just design examples)

aquatic in my headcanons works the same but it is a heavily simplified language to make it easier to communicate between different subspecies. all subspecies have the same amount of bio-scales, the main issue is just location of those scales hence why it is so simplified and most general flashes are followed by tail/hand/frill movements too

most of the royal seawing family consists of a mix of all three of these pelagic seawings, primarily (they are all unnamed atm so just gon refer to the colours for now) the purple subspecies which is the largest and one of the rarest, most seawing queens in history who have fought for the throne are apart of this subspecies specifically since they are incredibly strong n large. drawbacks to this subspecies is usually they don't live particularly long compared to the other subspecies of seawings due to their size and being on-land puts pressure on their body, they usually live in the summer palace without issue however due to the animus enchantments of the kingdom there. they are about the size of an average skywing, whom are the second tallest species on pyrrhia. this subspecies also lays clutches of 3-4 but it's more-so quanity over quality, many of the dragonets do not survive particularly well for a multitude of reasons-- many believe it's something to do with animus magic in this subspecies blood

(queen lagoon, tsunami, orca and queen coral are all apart of this subspecies regarding canon royalty. tsunami's smaller then she's suppose to be due to being stunted because of the cave + lack of proper nutrients)

the middle seawing subspecies isn't as rare nor as common, it's in a sort-of middle ground in-between both and is one of the more actively fit naturally rather then budgy, they are most commonly hunters, guards, etc. and usually are the most open-seas hunters hence their general sleekness. these guys are generally the most common to be found around the openseas of the kingdom. they are also the most expressive of the pelagic subspecies making them one of the easier to understand to outsiders since their eyes and general face isn't as fish-like as others. this subspecies lays clutches of 1-3, most of which are quality over quantity

(riptide, indigo and most of the seawing guards are apart of this subspecies. indigo's appearance differs somewhat to a heavier degree due to being apart of an earlier form of this subspecies)

the last subspecies is the most common and is basically the definition of an average seawing, they are rather short (maybe the shortest on pyrrhia) due to their stubby legs built for swimming. these subspecies primarily live on the coastal reefs and shores of the seawing kingdom, very few live in the actual summer palace itself. they are small since it makes it easier to swim in the waves of the coast and live around reefs n whatnot. most of their culture is heavily blended with other tribes, specifically mudwings and skywings due to living so close to the coast and whatnot, its not unusual to see many traditionally skywing or mudwing practices being somewhat morphed into a part of these seawing's culture after the years spent there. they are also the youngest/newest of the subspecies, only being created/recognised as their own separate subspecies around 1500-1400 years ago. this subspecies lays clutches of 2-5 and usually does quanity over quality, with on average 1-3 hatchlings becoming full-grown adults but due to the influence of outside help from those on the coasts, the number usually is 2-5 on average for survival; hence why the subspecies is so common
