✶ Jestyn
⋆ "Who's your favorite puppet?"
"Wizzy. He's so cute and funny."
"Ha-ha… Ahahaha, you have a good sense of humor, my majesty."
"I'm serious."
"No."
⋆ Jestyn is furious. He'd be angry if you simply named your favorite childhood doll, but another puppet from their kingdom… It's practically betrayal.
⋆ Jestyn is starting to get carried away with bondage. Tie his hands tightly so they don't grab the axe handle.
⋆ Jestyn is confused. He can't kill Wizzy. It's bad. It's wrong. It's a crime worthy of the guillotine. But he can influence you.
⋆ Jestyn's behavior becomes ridiculously obsessive. As soon as you step foot in the door, he's already there. His pranks increase, just to get your attention and vent a little jealousy.
⋆ Jestyn stalks you throughout the kingdom. No more walks or even simple conversations with Wizzy without his presence. Who knows what this sweet conversation will develop into if he's not attentive enough.
⋆ Jestyn's shining ruby ovals burn right through Wizzy when he dares to straighten the collar of your shirt.
⋆ "Wizzy, you are my friend and a loyal subject of my Majesty, but keep your hands to yourself and don't think of disobeying me. There can be no compromise here."
✶ Knighter
⋆ "Who's your favorite puppet?"
"Farmer"
"…"
⋆ Knighter doesn't care about your answer. No, seriously, he couldn't care less. He doesn't even know why he asked that stupid question.
⋆ Knighter would understand if you were talking to Wizzy - he's talented and polite - or Jestyn - he's charismatic and loyal… but a farmer???
⋆ Knighter replays your question in his head for the tenth time. He even admits it's hurt his self-esteem a bit.
⋆ Knighter watches you from the shadows as you talk to the farmer and involuntarily looks away. Yes, you weren't the most pleasant acquaintance, but he has many positive qualities, far more than the average farmer!
⋆ Knighter watches the squabble between Wizzy and Jestyn, not wanting to get involved. However, Jestyn's snatches of words reach his keen ears against his will.
So Jestyn doesn't even consider the farmer a potential competitor?
⋆ Knighter grabs your hand and leads you aside. Something inside him spreads with a pleasant warmth as your hands touch.
⋆ "It seems I also have a slight need for your recognition, Your Majesty."
✶ Wizzy
⋆ "Who's your favorite puppet?"
"Knighter, he's such a master of swordsmanship."
"Yes, he really is cool and strong, that's why he was knighted!"
⋆ Wizzy's sweet smile and cheerful voice hide his slight disappointment. It's not that he expected to become your favorite, but being recognized by Your Majesty is incredibly pleasant.
⋆ Wizzy keeps asking you why you like Knighter so much. Every detail is important to him.
⋆ Wizzy tidies his hair and adjusts his hat for the third time after you call Knighter handsome.
⋆ Wizzy delves deeper into his potion-making and lingers longer at his work when you praise Knighter's skill.
⋆ Wizzy doesn't even notice how his behavior is changing to suit your standards. When will you notice his new hairstyle?
⋆ Wizzy listens to Jestyn's reproaches without even fully understanding why.
⋆ "We all want to be recognized by Our Majesty, why have you decided to hog all their attention for yourself?"
✶ Prieston
⋆ "Who's your favorite puppet?"
"Pipi!"
"It's not even a puppet, child."
"Yes, but they're still so small and cute!"
⋆ Prieston laughs softly and strokes your head affectionately. He doesn't take it personally and is glad that the new ruler is already found a favorite.
⋆ Prieston is happy to find activities for the three of you.
⋆ Prieston figures out your evil plan and advises you to stop before things get too serious.
⋆ Prieston, along with Knighter, breaks up Jestyn and Wizzy when their conflict reaches its peak.
⋆ "You've created quite a mess. Are you proud of yourself, Your Majesty?"

Summary: 6 beautiful months have passed since MC took the role of ruler in the Kingdom of Marionettes. Jestyn and the others have prepared a surprise party for them, much to their amusement.
A/N: This will eventually be posted on Ao3 for those who prefer that as well. I swear my formatting of these fanfics are going to be consistent (one day). If you see a spot your OC would fit in, feel free to imagine them there.
It was the 6th month anniversary of MC becoming the ruler of the Kingdom of Marionettes, and Jestyn wanted to do something special. He made a grand announcement. One that would greatly please the ruler, or so he claimed.
A party. A celebration. A grand feast thrown to show MC love and appreciation for fulfilling their royal duties, and for the kindness they had given to all the denizens of the kingdom.
If it were up to Jestyn, the kingdom would throw a celebration every month.
Which is why it was great that the other main court puppets were involved.
Knighter opted to patrol the perimeter of the kingdom, taking a small group of puppets with him to do so. Arrangements were made to ensure that those who went on patrol and wanted to go to the celebration had openings to do so.
Prieston opted out of the celebration, needing some time alone. Other puppets followed suit, not quite into the idea of a celebration so soon after their broken isolation from the outside world, even if were just one human.
Wizzy was tasked with convincing Jestyn that they should compromise if he didn't want to wait for one year to pass. Not that it was hard. If Wizzy pulled the "your majesty wouldn't like this" card, Jestyn would easily agree to whatever it was, so long said majesty gave an opinion leaning that way.
The butler, maids, and other staff puppets made sure to clean up the appointed party room, the place resembling a ballroom. They worked overtime to cook, the kitchen almost literally on fire as they worked from the instant MC left the night prior to now, adding the finishing touches to any dishes made. The maids rolled the carts out with a fierceness in their eyes, others scrambling out their way.
The musicians all warmed up in their respective spots. Instruments were being put in their spots, dusted and tuned as best as they could be. Singers did little vocal exercises, making sure not to strain themselves too much. Their ruler still needed to hear them sing.
Jestyn watched it all unfurl, a list in his hand as he checked off everything written on it. Wizzy stood beside the jester, a soft smile on his face.
"I believe it is time for us to get their majesty, wouldn't you say, Wizzy?" Jestyn prompted, his eyes narrowed into small, gleeful slits.
"Yes, Jestyn, I think so, too." Wizzy sighed, shaking his head as he watched the other disappear.
Truly, that puppet was going to teleport himself into a wall one of these days with the gusto he displayed. If it were to happen, perhaps their dear ruler wouldn't mind taking a few of those, hm, photos? Yes, photos! On their technology.
He fixed up his hat and walked around, doing an extra check. It never hurt to be safe, and he was sure their resident medics would be appreciative if no one got hurt on the night everyone was supposed to have a break.
~
MC clocked in for their shift, a tired smile on their face. Another night, another moment ready for puppet tomfoolery.
Yes, they were still talking about Jestyn's pranks. Other puppets, no matter how much others tried, just couldn't match that damn jester's abilities.
This was all thought of endearingly, of course. Even if they got mad at someone, it wasn't like they couldn't resolve the situation. Emotional maturity was a good thing to cultivate, even if it felt strained at times.
They sat in their chair, placing a few goodies on the desk for a few of the marionettes. MC hoped the gifts would be appreciated.
Focusing on their job, they turned the computer on, the fans blaring and cameras activating. They clicked through each one, finding the theater oddly empty. Hm, was today going to be a slow day? Those weren't bad days, but MC felt like it was a little sudden to have one.
"Your Majesty?" A voice crooned from behind them.
"Oh, hey, Jestyn," MC responded, barely phased. If the other had seen their little jolt at his voice, the jester said nothing.
"You seem worried, Your Majesty." Jester cocked his head, "What ails you, Your Majesty?"
MC pointed at the screen, clicking through each camera carefully, "Do you know why it's so quiet today? All I really see is Knighter and his companions. Did a break-in happen while I was gone? Is everyone safe?"
Jestyn, as he usually did, smirked down at MC, bells jingling softly as he shook his head, "Oh my, Your Majesty, how caring you are. It is misplaced, though. We had no break-ins. Even if we did, intruders are easy to deal with."
MC decided not to bring up the copious amounts of graffiti and trash found around the place when they first came around. Though, maybe that was permitted. To…deter suspicion about why an abandoned theater would be maintained well. When they were doing research on the place, they didn't find any videos along the lines of "exploring the abandoned/rundown/haunted puppet theater at 3 AM" even after digging deep. Shout out to that library they were able to use just for that. Poor librarian, though. Eugh, wait. Maybe they were overthinking this. They were definitely overthinking.
A throat cleared, "Lost in thought again, Your Majesty?"
"Always am, my dear jester." MC quipped back, no heat behind their words.
Jestyn flushed, letting out a tittering laugh, "You always surprise me, Your Majesty. I will need you to take your head out of the clouds, though. The citizens have something to show you and it would be very improper if you were to keep them waiting."
Hm. Interesting.
MC leaned back in their chair, a hand going up to pat the looming jester's cheek, "Alright. Wait, I'm in my security garb. Wouldn't it be even ruder if I went in only this?"
Jestyn preened, fingers snapping, "If you look to the bed, Your Majesty, you will see we have made you clothes for this very occasion. In quite the stunning red, if I may add."
It was always red. How terribly obvious you were, Jestyn.
MC smiled at Jestyn and pulled their hand back, letting the puppet leave the room. After making sure he wasn't going to try coming back in, MC went over and quickly put on the outfit. The fabrics felt rather expensive, and the color was impressively deep. Small gold chains adorned their look. Was that real? Where would any of the puppets have gotten such things from?
Adjusting the look to the best of their ability, they fixed up their hair and any adornments they had on hand, then walked out the office. Jestyn stood to the side, and if it weren't for the light, MC might have mistaken him for Knighter.
"Well, I'm ready. Lead the way, Jestyn," MC offered their arm, Jestyn squatting down a bit to loop his own around MC's.
"Of course, Your Majesty."
~
The duo transported to the front of the room. Even with the thickness of the doors, MC could hear a commotion. They looked up at the jester puppet, the other letting go to grab the door handles.
"Are you prepared, Your Majesty?" The jester turned back, head tilted curiously.
MC stared at the doors apprehensively, brushing imaginary dust off their clothes and readjusting their cape and crown.
"Yeah, I think I'm ready."
Jestyn bowed, pushing the doors open.
Immediately, puppets went silent, the masses turning to the doors. Some bowed, others nodded, a few even knelt.
MC bowed back, crown crooked as they raised themself back up. They took a moment to adjust it, letting their nerves calm down a bit.
"I don't think it's my birthday. I also haven't been here for a year. What's this occasion for?" MC muttered to their jester, the words still slightly echoing even with their best attempts at a whisper.
Instead of answering, Jestyn moved to stand beside the ruler, clapping his hands once. The sound reverberated through the whole place. MC glanced around, half-expecting confetti to pop out somewhere.
Contrary to their assumption, puppets moved aside, creating a path towards a familiar throne. Jestyn moved to their right, close but not touching. Wizzy popped in out of nowhere, occupying their left. The two nodded to MC, subtly telling them to start moving.
MC walked forward, nodding to their subjects every once in a while, trying to keep the pace quick yet respectful. Curse these abhorrently tall puppets. If you weren't so endeared by them, you would have shit yourself from the horror-like scenario, warm lights and great-smelling food be damned.
When they reached the throne, they turned and sat elegantly, inwardly preening when they saw Wizzy give them a little thumbs up. Landing nailed.
Jestyn turned to address the crowd.
"Welcome one and all to our first celebration of a new ruler. For a glorious six months our kingdom has been revived, our lights shining, and our lives restored all through the diligence and care of our majesty."
"We would not be standing here, a feast laid before us, if it were not for the guidance we have been given from our great ruler. For so long we have waited, wondered, hoped. For so long we had believed that there would be no one to look upon us in joy, in trepidation, in fascination."
"For so long it had not happened. Some have tried to rule our kingdom, to no avail. Some have tried to conquer it. Some have even tried to invade our kingdom, to ruin it, to erase it. All of whom have been dealth with."
Jestyn's face shifted into something darker. MC, even after all this time, still let out an involuntary shiver at the look. At least it wasn't directed towards them. Wizzy shifted closer, patting their shoulder in consolation.
"And now we do. As if fated, we now have a benevolent, competent ruler. One who listens to our woes, to every single one of our issues, one who solves them through understanding and care."
He gestured to MC, the ruler giving a polite wave, a flush creeping up their face, warmth thawing the freezing fear. Wizzy gave Jestyn a pointed look. The jester, respectfully, had sung enough praises. There was a party to celebrate. Jestyn's smile turned into something softer, clearing his throat to wrap up.
"And so, to celebrate their accomplishments, we have come together as a kingdom to make a feast in their honor. Glory to the kingdom. Glory to our wonderful majesty."
Jestyn bowed, thunderous applause following suit. MC clapped along, neck craining to look up at Jestyn as he approached them, gesturing to the crowd.
Oh, right.
"Let the festivities begin!" MC announced to the crowd, another round of applause - and some cheering - erupting.
Puppets immediately scattered to the tables or into small groups, chatter rising among them. MC looked up at their jester, reaching a hand out to him. The puppet knelt, taking their hand and kissing the back of it.
"That was a beautiful speech, Jestyn." MC cooed, chuckling as he flushed.
"Thank you, Your Majesty." He said breathlessly.
He was fun to tease.
Wizzy cleared his throat, head tilted towards the crowd. A small reminder that now wasn't the time nor the place.
Jestyn shifted his look, face turning neutral, "Would you like me to retrieve you a plate, Your Majesty?"
MC nodded, watching as he darted into the crowd. With him out of the picture temporarily, MC turned to Wizzy, the wizard meeting their gaze with a gleeful look.
"How'd you all do this?" MC asked, eyeing the vast amount of platters, drinks, and…was that a chocolate fountain? Who even got that?
"I wouldn't worry about it too much, Your Grace." Wizzy deflected, "Jestyn works in many mysterious ways."
"Says the wizard." MC responded, eyebrow raised.
"Indeed."
The two sat in comfortable silence, Jestyn coming over with a plate for MC. They thanked him and dug in. Their stomach rumbled as food settled inside. Compliments to the kitchen staff! They never failed to make something to their tastes.
Wizzy magicked a napkin for the ruler, floating it over and dabbing their cheeks, crumbs and stains coming off. Oh, how embarrassing. Yet also sweet. They swallowed and smiled gratefully at their wizard.
MC looked out at the crowd, "No Knighter or Prieston?"
"Knighter is out doing his duty patrolling with some of the citizens, Your Majesty. Prieston chose to not participate," Jestyn relayed, "They agreed to a post-celebration celebration, if you so wish."
MC nodded thoughtfully, "That sounds good. I'd like some time with you all. Royal court and all that."
Both Jestyn and Wizzy flushed at that, their heads tilting away from the ruler. If only MC had their phone on them, they would be taking pictures of the two.
Suddenly, a loud cheer erupted from somewhere near the back, the telltale sound of bottles clinking. MC startled, a hand over their chest.
"Already?" Jestyn bemoaned, dramatically raising a hand to his forehead.
Wizzy shook his head, robes shaking with poorly hidden laughter.
It seemed the festivities were truly kicking off, now. MC took the opportunity to stand up and grab the two's hands, dragging them into the crowd. Formalities be damned, celebration beckoned them off the throne, they were so going to take it.
