Stiles rolled over and stared at the ceiling. All he wanted was a little sleep, just two fucking hours would be better than he’d been getting. Just two hours uninterrupted by bad dreams. Bad dream. Understatement of the year, Stiles. One night he didn’t wake up being held tight by his frantic father as he screamed himself hoarse. God, he’d worried his dad so much that they had a security system installed. Scrubbing a hand over his face he sat up and turned on the beside light. Pictures of unsolved cases stared back at him and he sighed. Sometimes, just once in a dark dark while, he’d think about the worst thing he could: giving up. 

He’d never tell Scott that, not after everything they’d been through. And the damn darkness he carried within him didn’t start those thoughts. He’d had them before usually around the time of year his mother passed and he let those go because hey, bad times = bad thoughts and he’d gotten through that, right? It was just… fuck not being able to sit still, not being able to articulate anything other than sarcasm in his worst moments, stuck on the bench… Yeah sometimes his mind got dark.

He never did anything about it because that was quitting and he wasn’t raised to quit. And he wished he could just open up to Scott but he hated worrying him. And of course Scott had Deaton and Isaac to talk to and Allison… how that even worked he didn’t know but they made it work. Deaton said he had a link with Lydia, she’d been his anchor sure but he just didn’t see opening up to her either. She had enough to worry about. 

He’d get through it, he always did. Silver linings could be found in anything, right? It just took time.

His eyes closed and he started breathing deeper as sleep took over. When he woke - late of course, his dad shaking his shoulders - he scrambled to get dressed, not noticing the mud caked on the bottom of his tennis shoes.
