Today in Haitian History - August 8, 1912 -- Death of President Cincinnatus Leconte in explosion at the Palais National 

Early in the morning of August 8, 1912, the Haitian Palais National was blown to pieces, presumably, by opponents to the central government. Along with the Haitian president, Cincinnatus Leconte, who had assumed office less than a year prior and whose presidency was plagued with political scandals, many soldiers perished in the extraordinary incident. While some later suggested that the explosion only concealed the fact that the president had already been murdered perhaps for personal reasons, it is generally agreed that Cincinnatus Leconte’s presidency and death came at a time of high political volatility.

Thus, symbolically, the explosion of the Palais National represents one of the greatest highlights of Haiti’s turn of the century political instability which appeared to have convinced many observers in Washington that an intervention  in the Caribbean Republic was imperative to restore order and fight the general anarchy which seemed to govern. Less than three years later, the United States would start a formal Occupation of the America’s second-oldest republic.
