SHORT BIOGRAPHY: In the Wish Realm, Pinocchio became a real boy thanks to his father’s belief that such a thing was possible. He grew up in and out of Snow White’s palace, becoming a close playmate and sometime surrogate big brother to Princess Emma. After Geppetto’s death, Pinocchio took over the woodcarving shop and began devoting all his time to it. Until the day that King David and Queen Snow were murdered and Princess Emma sought him out to carve her a magical wardrobe that would take her to the Land from which she claimed to have come. It was a fantastical story, but no more fantastical than that of a puppet brought to life by a wish. When the United Realms came into existence, August hoped to reconnect with his old friend and, while passing through the Land of Untold Stories, he met a young woman with a background not too dissimilar to his own. Since coming to Storybrooke, he’s opened up a carpentry shop, though he still hasn’t found the courage to seek out this realm’s version of his late father.

“It’ll be okay,” he murmurs. “Everything’s going to be just fine.”

She nods unconvinced, but smiles. “What if they act like the village girls? What if they try to burn the demon out of me?”

“Just because you were brought to life by magic doesn’t make you a demon, anymore than it does me,” Pinocchio reassures her.

“You don’t know how they’ll treat you, either,” she protests. “If we were going back to your land, that would be one thing. But you said you’d never been here either.”

“No, but my best friend lives here. She knows my origin and she’s always accepted me. She’ll accept you, too. And one thing I do know: this realm may not be the one I was born in, but it’s not the one you were born in either. Magic is commonplace. It’s not something outlawed, to be practiced in secret. It’s not automatically assumed to be evil. And I know you’re not evil.”

“I was brought to life by Dark Magic,” Lia protests.

“But you’re not Dark.”

“Sometimes, I want to be. Sometimes, I just... don’t feel like doing the right thing.”

Pinocchio shakes his head sadly, but he’s still smiling. “Welcome to being human, Lia. Trust me, it’s a lot better than you’re making it sound.”
