It’s because how wither roses are made

Something has to die for a wither rose to drop

Most often, these end up being random, passive mobs. Either from a player like Lizzie in the 100 hr Hardcore bringing her dogs into a narrow death tunnel, or from situations more like the wither in 3L or that grian unleashed in Boatem where the withers have more or less the entire world to pick mobs from.

And in both situations, it’s these innocent animals that die. Puppies who wag their tails when you guys walk together. Cow calves who follow their mother in large grazing fields. Foxes who run as fast as they can in terror at the slightest misstep. These pure creatures must die to drop a wither rose.

And that’s what nags at me.

There’s a connection there to be made, between grian and wither roses, that delves deeper than simply precious flower with thorns that kill. Something about the death of innocence at the hands of something so evil that it seeks only to hurt. Something about the death of nature at the hands of someones creation (withers don’t spawn naturally after all; even if the death is an accident, the creation cannot be, it’s not possible). Something about the destruction of safety at the hands of something that doesn’t care, that won’t even remember what it did to you.

But it’s late, and my heavy eyes can’t quite piece together that puzzle. My fingers fumble over the wiring and I drop it again. So, I beseech you to ponder this with me. Because it won’t leave my head

you said “death of something” and my first thought was the death of grian’s humanity. and for the sake of this, we’re talking on a Literal level.

connecting watcher grian to all of this since martyn did confirm that bit in last life…

the watchers took grian from his home, evo. they took him, a Player, and made him into something that he is not. A Watcher. there’s a lot of different interpretations as to how this happens, but my personal favorite is they rewrite grian’s code.

they remove the parts of grian that is human, and replace them with new codes, codes that make him a watcher.

OHOHO 👀. let’s do it.

He never expected to see his love again, not after losing him so suddenly. Yet here he stands, in front of that statue, the very spitting image of the last time Mumbo saw him. His throat feels dry, and his eyes water. He almost wants to cry.

He blinks and wipes at his eyes, as if expecting this to be a dream. But when his eyes are clear, he finds his lost lover standing in front of him still. He looks a bit different, with his darker hair and eyes.

Still, Mumbo would immediately recognize him, even in a crowded room.
