Wen Ning feels is the one most in complete sentences, so:
They call him the Ghost General now. He never even wanted to be a soldier.
The Wen Remnant scratches out a life in the Burial Mounds, and Wen Ning knows it is only because Wei Wuxian was here before that they can. He can feel everything that was fought into submission to make this place of death a place of safety. He's not sure how long the balance can hold, but he focuses on the day to day.Â
They grow turnips, and he hauls them down the mountain to sell. He is stronger now than he ever was in life. He prepares medicines with his sister and meals for his family with hands that would sooner crush than create. He teaches himself to be gentle, and tries to relearn how to smile. Nothing hurts anymore, or feels much of anything. Young Mistress Jiang gives him soup one day, though, and it's warm in his hands. He carries the bowl all the way back home for sweet little A-Yuan. He doesn't sleep any more, so he patrols the Burial Mounds at night, a silent sentinel in the dark to keep them all safe. He is a fierce corpse, yes, but he is himself, and he can choose who he will be.
He reflects with something like amusement that this peaceful time in his life should come after he is dead.
