Frowning down at the table, Howard was picking at a crack near the edge of the small dining room table he had shoved in the far corner of his kitchen. There was a mug of coffee in front of him but it had long since stopped sending up steam and he was glad he hadn't actually gotten around to adding cream to it because it would have just been wasted. Because all he'd done so far on his day off was sit and think.
Katherine was hiding some from him and the idea of that was almost enough to make it hard to comprehend. That wasn't a thought he'd ever had to try and wrap his brain around, even the months she was gone they'd spent nights telling each other what had happened to themselves while apart. But she was actively trying to keep something from him now.
She had slipped out early that morning, forgetting he thinks that he didn't work today.
She was hiding something and it involved going somewhere, but- but he could find her. Find out.
Mind made up, he pushed back from the table with a scrape of the chair against the linoleum. Threw a jacket on before he was out of the apartment and out onto the street (his lesson learned in making sure he had his wallet and phone in his pockets). Took a deep breath and concentrated on their bond and started walking.
Followed it until he was standing across the street from a motel tucked into a corner somewhere, probably mostly forgotten but got enough patronage to stay in business. Bypassing the office, he followed his bond until he was standing in front of what he was pretty sure was the right door. Could hear low voices murmuring and one he was pretty sure was Katherine's, and as much as he wanted to surprise whoever was inside he was in full view of whoever wanted to see so he couldn't attempt to pick the look.
So instead he lifted his hand and knocked firmly.
