waking up to the sound of little hoodlings running into you and calum's room on christmas morning. they screamed it was time to open presents and that santa really came. quickly you woke up likewise calum was still sound asleep holding his pillow. "daddy come on!!" baby boy hood whined. "five more minuets kiddos." calum mumbled still half asleep. "BUT DADDY SANTA LEFT US PRESENTS WHAT IF ITS A PUPPY??" baby girl hood would scream. you looked at your husband and he rubbed his eyes cause he just couldnt say no to his little princess. "fine. lets go." he got up and out of bed grabbing a shirt to put on. baby girl and baby boy hood cheered and ran downstairs. "dont get mad at me if I fall asleep at your parents cause we're literally opening presents at 5 in the morning." he grumbled before walking out of the bedroom to join the kids in the living room.

âYou still take coffee black?â a familiar voice questioned you, the timbre of it sounding deeper than you remembered.
Smiling, you shut your book and cast your gaze towards the man sliding into the seat in front of you, a grey beanie adorning his chestnut hair. âYeah,â you replied, swirling the drink against its confines before taking a sip. âSugar and cream still doesnât sit well with my stomach.â
âOh, donât I know it,â Calum remarked, setting his own cup of what you could only guess was hot chocolate down on the table between you two, nestled into the back of the shop. âI thought I was being a gentleman when I showed up at your work with a coffee for you after our second date and almost killed you because I didnât know you were lactose-intolerant.â
You shrugged, smiling down at the cedar bark tables and tracing the lines of the glazed with your eyes. âSo howâve you been?â you asked, biting your lip at the awkward atmosphere surrounding you and your former partner.
Calum smiled. âIâve been good, actually, thanks for asking.â
You raised your eyebrows in question, hoping your expression looked more like a playful jest rather than resembling a grimace or glare, as your emotions were running haywire at the thought of someone else making Calum happy. He deserved it, you knew that much, but you couldnât stop the thought from hurting.
âWe actually just wrapped on the new album,â the brunette started, scratching at his jaw and crossing his ankles together so that his lean body laid casually across his chair. âWeâre starting to plan the tour dates and stuff which is awesome and Iâve been working with a few other artists songwriting.â
A genuine smile lit up your face. âThatâs really good to hear Calum,â you told him, âIâm glad.â You took another sip of your drink before asking, âHowâs your family?â
âTheyâre good, as embarrassing as ever, but,â the bassist shrugged with a smile toying at his lips, âI still love âem to death.â
You nodded, trying to ignore the burning desire to beg him to tell you about everything youâd fallen behind on in the last year; everything youâd missed out on while enduring bitter mornings in which you only made coffee for one and evenings covered in an array of blankets with only the heat of your own body to keep you warm still stung like the wind against your neck on days when you forgot a scarf. You settled for, âHow are Mali and her boyfriend?â
Calum grinned, his face glowing at the mention of his sister. âActually, he just proposed two weeks ago.â
âWow,â you choked out, trying to paste a believable smile across your lips because although you were ecstatic for Mali (someone youâd thought would one day be your sister-in-law), you couldnât help but want to cry at the fact that such a significant event had happened without you even knowing. You thought youâd be right beside Calum when such things occurred, sharing his joy instead of hearing about. âThatâs great,â you managed to tack on, though you could tell from the clench of the brunetteâs hand around his cup of coffee that he heard the falter in your voice.
Another bout of silence passed, a few sips and moments of people watching dragging on before you cleared your throat and dared yourself to hold Calumâs gaze. âThank you for coming, Iâm really glad you made time to see me.â
The brunette smiled sadly. âEven if every waking minute of my schedule was planned, I still wouldâve made time for you, Y/N. You know that.â
Laughing (though it sounded more like choking to be completely honest), you brushed a tear from just beneath your eyelid with your thumb before fluffing your hair and throwing it over your shoulder; a nervous tick Calum always seemed to pick up on.
âSo,â he started, his eyes following his finger as it moved the little droplets of condensation from his beverage across the shiny surface of the table. âWhy did you want to meet me here?â
You swallowed around the lump in your throat, knowing Calum already knew the answer but was daring you to say it aloud and sober; the only times heâd heard it since last December - when youâd left him cold and alone in New York - were drunk muttered rumblings along the lines of âtoday was the first family gathering Iâve been to since we broke up and my little cousin that absolutely adored you asked where you were and I had to lock myself in the bathroom and sit in the tub for a half an hour and look through a folder on my phone of pictures I took of you to feel okay again.â
âI miss you,â you stated, trying to catch Calumâs eye but accepting his refusal to meet it before continuing. âI know⊠I know I fucked up.â You gazed at the ceiling of the coffee shop, the patterns of flashing lights and brief bursts of colors reflecting from passer bys while blinking tears out of your eyes. âI was so scared,â you whispered, âBecause what we originally started was just for fun and then,â you paused, âAnd then it got a little more serious and I was okay with that. And then September, do you remember that?â you asked, laughing through your tears and almost shivering when Calum reciprocated your watery smile. âThat was the first time I let you see me cry and, gosh,â you stated, rubbing at your nose, âLook at me now.â You heaved a sigh. âAnd then, I fell in love. And I got scared. And I justâŠâ you shrugged. âI ran away. And Iâm sorry.â
You watched Calum, noting how much more defined his jawline was and the accumulation of stubble thatâd grown on over his neck, cheeks, and chin. His hair was a little bit shorter than the last time you saw it in person but it appeared as if heâd kept up his curly style; your absolute favorite look on him. The brunetteâs lips were a bit chapped but his brown skin still possessed a radiance youâd always told him you were jealous of; loving to watch him blush and try to hide his grin by shoving his face into your chest.
After another moment of silence, you added, âIâve tried to move on, but no one is you,â before biting your lip so you couldnât continue.
Calum sighed, a gust of air filling and expelling from his lungs before he pressed his elbows onto the table and said, âIt wouldnât be easy, you know?â
You nodded.
âLike, itâd be really hard for me to trust you again.â
Again, you nodded.
âBut,â Calum shrugged, a small smile adorning his lips. âI donât think⊠with time, it would be impossible.â
âAre you saying what I think youâre saying?â you asked, trying to calm your racing heart in case you were totally reading into the brunetteâs words.
Calum shrugged, âI guess thatâs up to you⊠Do you still like that restaurant down on 5th?â
You grinned before forcing your lips into a coy smirk. âOnly if youâre buying.â
The brunette laughed, the melodious tinkle defrosting your cold, frozen heart. âWell of course, I always pay on the first date, dontcha know?â
For @alreadymissings and @shutuplashton winter!5SOS night
You had always loved winter. You loved the annual changes, the leaves falling, replaced with stark black branches of trees that twisted and turned in the wind. The mornings where you would wake up to see snowflakes, where two never seemed the same, covering your windowsill. You loved the feeling of Christmas, the carols you would hear in every corner, and the smell of fire, candy and chocolate. Which is why you fell in love with Luke. Luke was like winter. His eyes were the pale blue sky that you loved to wake up to, eyes as unique as the snowflakes that you loved so much. His hair was the palest blond, reminding you of snow, and how you two would fall on a pile of snow, giggling and lips brushing as you both tried your best to make angels. Kisses that left you feeling warm and breathless and happy like the warm fires and marshmallows that you fed to each other on a lazy day, cuddled around each other while watching reruns of all your favourite Christmas movies, quoting them back and forth. Â But unlike winter, your love for him wasnât seasonal.
