Weeb Wednesday: Haikyu! (2014)
Sports, comedy, shounen
Inspired after watching a volleyball ace nicknamed "Little Giant" in action, small-statured Shouyou Hinata joins Karasuno High School's volleyball team. Due to his short height, Hinata struggles to find his role on the team, even with his superior jumping power. Surprisingly, Tobio Kageyama, a prodigy nicknamed “The King of the Court,” has his own problems that only Hinata can help with, and learning to work together appears to be the only way for the team to be successful. Based on Haruichi Furudate's popular shounen manga of the same name, Haikyuu!! is an exhilarating and emotional sports comedy following two determined athletes as they attempt to patch a heated rivalry in order to make their high school volleyball team the best in Japan.
Haikyu has been around for a while, and truth be told, up until last month, I had absolutely no interest in it (or volleyball in general) due to it being a sports anime. Nevertheless, upon finally giving it a shot, I must say that I regret not getting into it sooner. Haikyu has a lot more going for it than just great sports sequences, fluid animation, and a stellar soundtrack. It has a lot of heart. Not only does the story revolve around drama both on and off the court, but it is written in a way that even non-sports fans can relate to the characters and feel their personal growth with each episode. The characters truly are the heart of the show as each one is filled to the brim with personality as well as their own individual aspirations and insecurities. It is also chock-full of laugh-out-loud comedic moments that just make for a much more fun viewing. When the going gets serious, it does so with an amazing soundtrack that I have been personally listening to for years even before I watched the show. I will admit that due to this series, I have even begun looking up actual volleyball games on YouTube, and knowing more or less the mechanics of the game now, I must say it is kind of a cool sport. This is an example of an anime adapting its real-life subject matter with such accuracy, passion, and respect. Seeing the boys grow together and enhance their skills as well their teamwork is such a satisfying experience. Don’t sleep on this one. Catch the first couple of seasons on Netflix. Let’s Fly!
