Windrush Day
On the third official Windrush Day, we recognise the half a million people who travelled to the UK after World War II, and celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants to our communities here in the UK.
Our 'Nice Cup of Tea?' display is a collaboration with members of Oxford's African Caribbean and Windrush communities, highlighting hidden stories of empire and slavery behind the tea trade. You can see it on display in Gallery 40.
Happy #WindrushDay2021 A day to celebrate 500 Caribbean migrants (classed as British) who arrived @ Tilbury Docks Essex UK, 1948. This piece was inspired by the resilience of the #windrushgeneration (my Jamaican 🇯🇲 parents) & the #WindrushScandal. This selection from the Book of Common Prayer was a final view of the Fly-over before they pulled it down - it was kind of iconic in that end of town and at the left you can see the entrance to the Mersey Tunnel. This was part of the Urban Sketchers trip to the Walker that year. After that was a set of small prints for the Diggers, the Luddites and the Saboteurs. I had made them earlier but we had had a chance to on a solidarity event at the Casa in Liverpool for Windrush. I then designed a new block and there was an evening of poetry and performance and comedy and I got to set up a stall and ink as many of the blocks as I could do people could take a free print or print one themselves. I was interested in the idea that printmaking was a way of democratising images and linked back to the early use of print in political pamphlets. People responded really well and it was a privilege to be included in the event, which had been organised by my friends from UCU and an amazing lecturer from California who had also organised a parallel live streamed event at Berkeley University. The next few pages are the initial drawings for the new plate and some separate images by Aloka -who is my favourite western Buddhist artist who had almost single handedly developed the recognisable visual iconography for an ancient tradition but that had few roots in the west #sketchbook #urbansketch #urbansketchers #beautifulliverpool #flyover #merseytunnel #diggers #saboteurs #luddite #windrush #windrushgeneration #solidarity #antiracist #berkeley #ucu #casa #linocut #linocutprint #aloka #triratnabuddhism #buddhistart #greentara #amogasiddhi #liverpoolartist (at Mersey Tunnels) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDTphYTghcZ/?igshid=fhyfkak9szg3
Since its #WindrushDay I thought I'd reshare these pieces. The text below was penned by @sazisophiri about my work, I couldn't have put it better myself • • • • • • Featured works: 'God Save the Queen' and 'Windrush Scandal' by @thehoneyeffect . . . . 72 years ago the HMT Empire Windrush arrived by Tilbury Docks carrying workers from the Caribbean who were invited as BRITISH subjects to help rebuild Britain post WW2. Upon arrival they were met with hostility, and that hostile continued for many of them facing racism and discrimination, and being denied rights. Nowadays it’s hard to mention the name Windrush without it preceding the word ‘scandal’. It’s painful to think of all those who have suffered in the hands of the British government, with some losing their livelihoods, being taken from everyone they knew and deported to places they were not familiar with. For some of the victims, the stress of this caused health problems which led to the loss of life. A compensation fund has been created but a tiny percentage has been paid. Many still await justice. The artworks featured in the post are by @thehoneyeffect and illustrate some of the struggles that the Windrush generation and the generations after them have had to endure throughout the decades. These works were originally commissioned by @leftlionmagazine for their Windrush special 2 years ago, and the first one is featured on the front cover of Journeys to Nottingham by @nottinghamblackarchive that features a collections of narratives and photographs from people who travelled from the Caribbean to Nottingham during the Windrush era. Copies were being sold at @new_art_exchange. I will place a link in my bio to the drama ‘Sitting in Limbo’ which premiered on the BBC a few weeks ago about one of the victims of the scandal. I’ll also include the link to Nottingham Black Archive’s website and @thehoneyeffect’s Etsy store where you can purchase prints of the work featured in this post. #windrushgeneration #windrushday2020 #blackbritain #blackwomenartists (at Nottingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBv7YkmF_x4/?igshid=1s4ecmm20qeg9
