Tower of London . 3. The zenith of the castle’s use as a prison was the 16th & 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, Sir Walter Raleigh, & Elizabeth Throckmorton, were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase “sent to the Tower”. Despite its enduring reputation as a place of torture & death, popularised by 16th-century religious propagandists & 19th-century writers, only seven people were executed within the Tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the notorious Tower Hill to the north of the castle, with 112 occurring there over a 400-year period. In the latter half of the 19th century, institutions such as the Royal Mint moved out of the castle to other locations, leaving many buildings empty. Anthony Salvin & John Taylor took the opportunity to restore the Tower to what was felt to be its medieval appearance, clearing out many of the vacant post-medieval structures. . In the First & Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison & witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired, & the castle reopened to the public. Today, the Tower of London is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. Under the ceremonial charge of the Constable of the Tower, & operated by the Resident Governor of the Tower of London & Keeper of the Jewel House, the property is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces & is protected as a World Heritage Site. . . . #TowerofLondon #London #Thetower #thewhitetower #Heritage #History #HistoryofEngland #historyinpictures #England #Londonhistory #Historiclondon #Riverthames #Tower #WilliamtheConqueror #towerhill #Cityoflondon #Placestovisit, #Castle #palaces #hermajesty #thequeen #Crownjewels #towerhamlets #RoyalHistory #Britishhistory #historyofbritain #VisitLondon (at Tower of London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR_gDuWsCyT/?utm_medium=tumblr

Continuing with my Tower of London set of posts; . The Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace & Fortress the Tower of London, & Members of the Sovereign’s Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary, popularly known as the Beefeaters, are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. In principle they are responsible for looking after any prisoners in the Tower & safeguarding the British crown jewels. They have also conducted guided tours of the Tower since the Victorian era. . All warders are retired from the Armed Forces of Commonwealth realms & must be former warrant officers with at least 22 years of service. They must also hold the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. Since 2011, the garrison has included 37 Yeomen Warders & one Chief Warder. . Although the Yeomen Warders are often referred to as Yeomen of the Guard, which is a distinct corps of Royal Bodyguards of the British monarch, they are in fact a separate entity within this guard. Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera, The Yeomen of the Guard (1888), is set in the 16th century, an earlier era before the two corps were split apart; it concerns what are today the Yeomen Warders. . . . #TowerofLondon #London #Thetower #thewhitetower #Heritage #History #HistoryofEngland #historyinpictures #England #Londonhistory #Historiclondon #Riverthames #yeoman #WilliamtheConqueror #towerhill #Cityoflondon #Placestovisit, #Castle #palaces #hermajesty #thequeen #Crownjewels #towerhamlets #RoyalHistory #Britishhistory #historyofbritain #VisitLondon #Yeomanwarder #Beefeater (at Tower of London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSCUOFeMtxN/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty’s Royal Palace & Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. . It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, which is separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. . It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 & was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was also used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins), although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. . . . #TowerofLondon #London #Thetower #thewhitetower #Heritage #History #HistoryofEngland #historyinpictures #England #Londonhistory #Historiclondon #Riverthames #Tower #WilliamtheConqueror #towerhill #Cityoflondon #Placestovisit, #Castle #palaces #hermajesty #thequeen #Crownjewels #towerhamlets #RoyalHistory #Britishhistory #historyofbritain #VisitLondon (at Tower of London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR_escNsZ7H/?utm_medium=tumblr
The Ravens . Legend maintains that - “should the ravens ever leave the Tower, the White Tower will fall & disaster will befall the kingdom” . A group of at least six captive ravens reside at the Tower of London. Their presence is traditionally believed to protect The Crown & the Tower; a superstition holds that “if the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.” Some historians, including the Tower’s official historian, believe the “Tower’s raven mythology is likely to be a Victorian flight of fantasy”. The earliest known reference to captive ravens at the Tower is an illustration from 1883. . Historically, wild ravens were common throughout Britain, even in towns; the Tower was within their natural range. When they were exterminated from much of their traditional range, including London, they could only exist at the Tower in captivity & with official support. The Tower ravens are tended to by the Ravenmaster of the Yeomen Warders. Local legend puts the origin of the captive raven population at the time of King Charles II (reigned 1660–85). Some of the ravens at the Tower were specially bred in Somerset. . . . #Raven #ravens #TowerofLondon #London #Thetower #thewhitetower #Heritage #History #HistoryofEngland #historyinpictures #England #Londonhistory #Historiclondon #Riverthames #Tower #WilliamtheConqueror #towerhill #Cityoflondon #Placestovisit, #Castle #palaces #hermajesty #thequeen #Crownjewels #towerhamlets #RoyalHistory #Britishhistory #historyofbritain #VisitLondon (at Tower of London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSCyt-1MLVZ/?utm_medium=tumblr
On This Day In History 25 December 1066 William, Duke of Normandy was crowned King of England About William; ◼ William I (born.c. 1028 – died.9 September 1087), usually known as William the Conqueror & sometimes William the Bastard, was the first Norman King of England, reigning from 1066 until his death in 1087. ◼ William was the descendant of Viking raiders, he had been Duke of Normandy since 1035. After a long struggle to establish his power, by 1060 his hold on Normandy was secure, & he launched the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The rest of his life was marked by struggles to consolidate his hold over England & his continental lands & by difficulties with his eldest son. ◼ Afterwards he made arrangements for the governance of England in early 1067 before returning to Normandy. Several unsuccessful rebellions followed, but by 1075 William’s hold on England was mostly secure, allowing him to spend the majority of the rest of his reign on the continent. ◼ William’s final years were marked by difficulties in his continental domains, troubles with his eldest son, & threatened invasions of England by the Danes. ◼ In 1086 William ordered the compilation of the Domesday Book, a survey listing all the landholders in England along with their holdings. ◼ William died in September 1087 while leading a campaign in northern France, & was buried in Caen. His reign in England was marked by the construction of castles, the settling of a new Norman nobility on the land, & change in the composition of the English clergy. ◼ He did not try to integrate his various domains into one empire, but instead continued to administer each part separately. William’s lands were divided after his death: Normandy went to his eldest son, Robert, & his second surviving son, William, received England. #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1066 #WilliamI #WilliamIofEngland #WilliamtheConqueror #WilliamtheBastard #EnglishMonarchy #History #Royalty #Coronation #WestminsterAbbey #BritishMonarchy #D25Dec #Royalhistory #instaroyals #instahistory #Norman #Normans #Battleofhastings #onthisday #Dukeofnormandy #Normandy #Normanconquest (at Westminster Abbey) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6gsDjdAwYo/?igshid=yxx1lfohcwvf
