The Phoenix Pencil Company by Allison King

What a debut! Put simplistically, it’s a beautiful story about family, war, loss, grief, memory, connection, and magic.

I’ll admit that it took me a little bit to get into it, but once I did, I read, teared up, and read more.

Allison King is definitely an author to watch and I’m looking forward to reading her future tales. The Phoenix Pencil Company is a definite recommendation.

Atmospheric, slow moving and character driven, The Children is most definitely one to read.

Gorgeously written, with twists, parental neglect, the fans and sycophants who thrive off nearness to Edith and Llewellyn, Guinivere and Ennis are all each other really has. After the death of their parents, and a long estrangement, Ennis is putting on an a new art show titled ‘Mother’, and well, no more on that part, but know that I was obsessed with reading. I couldn’t stop thinking about this when I wasn’t reading, and now that I’ve finished and sat with my thoughts after, I’m still pondering.

This one is bound to be a big read this summer and I can’t recommend it enough!

A library that is a refuge, a library where one could choose to live inside a book (one from the public domain). An awesome librarian, a lost young woman whom the library welcomes, a dragon, books that are sentient, unwritten books, ghosts, and so so much. I read each page of this with happiness and I absolutely adored this.

I loved this; it’s a definite recommendation!

What book would you live in? Like Kate Quinn, I would choose Narnia, but in opting for a book in the public domain, I’m just not certain. Perhaps the Hundred Acre Wood or Avonlea.

I found George, the main character so intensely dislikable throughout the novel. Despite time traveling, and dealing with life in 1300 he does not evolve - I found this difficult to move past.

So many things here don’t make sense, and I was never able to really connect with the story. Other readers might enjoy this far more, but I wasn’t the reader for this.

King Sorrow: A Novel by Joe Hill

King Sorrow is, without a doubt, one of the best books I will read this year.

So immense, creepy, and immersive that I can’t wait to reread by listening to this one on audiobook to better soak in the full breadth of the story.

What a fantastical tale; this is a definite recommendation.
