Not what I was writing earlier, but inspired by my latest screenshots. [Characters: Tony Stark, William Stark-Potts (oc)]
âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm trying to hug you, scoot over, kid,â Tony snarks and makes a shooing motion with his fingers to indicate that he needs some space on the bed in order to attempt this. Will eyes him quizzically but presses his fists into the mattress and lifts himself over anyway. He starts to pull his knees closer to him, thinks on it, and then flattens them, parallel with the ground.
Tony shifts over and wraps his arms around his sonâs torso. He feels two slender arms return the gesture and a head land just below the shoulder, cast to the side so has not to block his nose or mouth from getting air.
âI love you, kid, and Iâll always be here for you, you know that, right?â
He feels the head shake up and down against him.
âYou have a problem with someone, come right to me,â he says. âI promise, I wonât embarrass you in front of your friends or whatever. Even if dads are supposed to do that, I wonât.â
Will begins to shake in his arms, which is soon followed by a soft chuckling. Tonyâs lips split in satisfaction. God, he loves this kid so much.
At long last, Will pulls out of the embrace and rakes the back of his hand across his eyes. Despite the next few sniffles, heâs grinning. Shaky, but amused.
âYou want to come down for dinner, now?â asks Tony only to receive a nonverbal ânoâ.
âNot hungry,â Will replies. âAnd I have homeworkâ.â
Tony pats his son on the knee before rising off the bed. The mattress squeaks, faint, with the motion. âIâll make sure thereâs some leftovers in the fridge for you for later,â he understands. âJust donât stay up past midnight tonight. School tomorrow.â
Thereâs a nod of a head, and Tony takes that as his cue to leave. Part of him feels like Willâs not going to abide by that tonight â just a hunch, if the kid is anything like his maker, â but tonight is not the night to police his sleep schedule. Tonight, heâll let Will recuperate however he can; the kid needs it. Tomorrow, Tonyâs worry about setting good living habits may resume. For now, he joins the rest of the family downstairs at the dining table. By the end, he makes good on his latest promise by heaping the remaining rice and beans into a Tupperware, slapping a sticky note with an all caps scrawled âWILLâ on the lid, and shoving it onto the clearest fridge shelf.
Sometimes, the best thing to be done is to take a step back and let them sort out their problems, but to always be there, watching and ready â ready to offer his support at the drop of a dime. Support goes a lot further of the way forward than anything else.
