S3 WHERE EVERYTHING IS (”)EXACTLY(”) THE SAME BUT WILL HAS GLASSES BC HIS VISION IS WORSE AFTER BEING IN THE UPSIDE DOWN. okay let’s GO i have this wip that i am going to toss in here because it WORKS even though it’s pretty mike and will heavy... not entirely sorry:
so... Mike starts noticing that Will constantly looks like there’s a glare in his eyes; he squints the Party approaches him from across the arcade parking lot or the food court. Mike’s never seen Will do that-- look like that-- before. It’s was such an unhappy expression, Mike can’t forget it. Even if it dissolves once they say his name or get closer.
Mike finally asks when they’re all at Scoops Ahoy-- celebrating Dustin’s return from camp. Will’s trying to read the little hand-out menu, but he’s holding it SO close to his face.
Mike says something dumb and cute like: Why are you trying to kiss the menu, I'm right here. And Will will smile but then sigh with a quiet, I can't read it, Mike. It's so... blurry. Robin asks for his order and it keeps Mike from looking that deeply into Will’s sentence. He shrugs and silently notes the menu is over crowded and overwhelming. Mike helps Will decide what to order-- but it isn’t until later he realizes he was actually helping Will read the cluttered print.
They’re at the arcade, just the two of them, when Mike notices-- really notices-- it again. They’re playing Galaga and Will is a terrible shot. Like... he’s awful. He’s standing strangely far away from the machine and constantly looking over at Mike, almost as if he’s nervous. Mike steps back, thinking he’s crowding Will, but he doesn’t stop. He keeps checking on Mike-- or maybe seeing how Mike is checking up on him. Which, truthfully, he’s starting to do; Will hasn’t made it past the first level yet and is running low on quarters.
Mike asks what the problem is: what is he looking at, looking for? He places his hand on Will’s back, assuring him he’s with Will, in case he’s getting anxious about the noise in the arcade or the shuffling of people. Will sighs as he loses again and lets his shoulders fall. As the new screen boots up, he waits a moment before leaning in toward the screen, nose an unsanitary distance to it.
“Can you really not see that screen?” Mike asks, knowing his incredulousness isn’t helping but... it’s Will. If he can be honest and open with anyone without minding his words, it’s him. And this is a moment he doesn’t want to walk around. He’s never seen Will do this before. Never seen him struggle so much to see.
“No.” Will says back. His tone is short but also tired. A quiet plea: why can’t I? “I can’t see anything lately. It’s all... a giant fuzz.”
“You should tell your mom.” Mike starts thinking about where his dad goes to get his glasses and where his doctor is. He figures they’re friends; they’ll help each other out and help Will.
“She’s busy... I don’t know. She’s busy reading a lot of the time I don’t want to interrupt her-- whatever she’s studying.” Will lets the game go and loses again. He’s looking at Mike, but they’re close enough he doesn’t have to squint.
“You have to. This is important.” Mike says. “You’re important. You can’t be walking around blind. You won’t always have me to be your eyes.”
“Why not?” Will says, shoulders sagging. “Then maybe Mom will stop talking about moving.”
“Yeah... maybe. Then you’ll just have to be with me forever.”
“Forever, yeah.”
“But I do think glasses could be nice. Really thin round ones? Like a scientist or something!”
“You mean like Egon?”
“Yeah! Yeah! Our very own Spengler! Oh my Ghostbusting hero.” Mike pretends to swoon and Will nearly knocks him over with a gentle shove.

OH imagine if he as doing the Neck Thing in order to hide it from the group, but he was really just Accessing Now Memories with full vision while he’s sitting there with his friends. OH now i’m thinking of that scene where they’re all yelling about El using her powers too much (which was valid we love concerned friends) but IMAGINE will sitting there, with his clairvoyance powers just. dead silent. his power isn’t controlled, isn’t able to be controlled... can they still be worried about him or is he a lost cause-- just something useful...
You better believe that Will and Max and an “I’m taller than you” contest between 1984-5 and Max was shook when Will came to hang out and was almost a head taller than her

I love the idea of all the Party teasing Will about being the smallest, being the gentlest little kid, just so so small!! and then he comes to visit one day and he’s just like nine feet tall with a deeper voice and Jonathan’s old clothes so he looks all rugged and grunge and everyone’s just.... HELLO????? WILLIAM!!!!!
How about instead of the party being dicks to Will in s3, he distances himself from them bc he feels like he’s holding them back and then the Party reassures him they love him
I can picture the moment they realize; I feel like it wouldn’t be until after they’ve gone off on some mall adventure without him-- Will claiming he doesn’t feel well or something (again). They claim a table at Scoops and they immediately start dragging chairs over-- it already had four, but then they add two more. But then. They have this extra chair... They quick try to do the math: Four (Dustin, Mike, Lucas, and Will) plus the two for the girls... Why is there an extra? Mike looks in line, like maybe someone slipped off without him noticing-- but they’re all still there. Then it hits him. They left Will at home. Again... And he thinks: they should bring him home some ice cream, maybe a new comic book!
Then it’s a race to see who can get Will the best Get Well Soon gift. They’re all stretching their arcade and movie money and getting Will books, food, funny sunglasses, extra warm socks, and everything a boy could need for a sick day. They all rush back to Will’s-- but find him sitting in the grass outside, helping his mom with the front garden. It takes Dustin asking Will why he was outside when he’s sick for Mike to realize-- oh... they haven’t been the best of friends to him, have they? THEN of course, it’s presenting all their gifts and asking Will what he wants to do that day, and for the next week. But that’s only just a band aid, isn’t it...
I got another anon about Will pulling away because their neglect to his interest reminds him of Lonnie, and now I’m thinking about Will trying to talk about the “weirdness” he feels when they shoot him down all the time. And Max just immediate gets it. She’s like No Okay We Messed Up-- we need to make sure you feel okay when we all hang, okay?? You tell us if you feel weird, or anything. You tell us. And it’s this big sappy mess and group hug. And Joyce is just there gardening like, yeah, my kids are going to be okay. they’ve always got each other, huh....

But how does the party react to Will’s trauma? We know Mike was really protective over him like he had the whole “he’s MY friend” storyline until El came back. What about the others?
I think at first they’d react super poorly. I think they’d be better with El’s trauma because she’s an ~experiment child~ you know? They expect her to have quirks and speak in timid and limited English etc etc. But Will? He’s a normal kid! He’s them! He’s supposed to bounce back like they did! I mean, sure Lucas had some nightmares and Dustin doublechecks the back of Steve’s car whenever he gets in it now, but they’re FINE!!! Will though is not fine... He’s so taken (again) by his own terror and memories. He has seen things he doesn’t even know how to describe! Now-Memories were great nomenclature for the Party, but they still don’t even really know what they were/are! They’re just moments when Will Disappeared Momentarily, then Came Back with true information (like about Hopper or “turn left”).
They don’t get it-- so I imagine at first they really just... treat it like he’s being dramatic, or maybe-- more rather-- they don’t think to put as much weight into their reassurance to him. They were okay with a quick pep talk from Robin or a hug from a Party member or the leftover popcorn after a scary film got one of them a bit too amped up. They’ll mishandle things by thinking the little things are all they need to do. Not that they don’t help, but they aren’t the main kind of assurance Will needs when he’s suddenly afraid he’s in a now memory because he feels too removed from reality and needs to be grounded. Needs his friends to gently stomp his feet and say his name and hold onto his hands and push down on his shoulders while he pushes up. Tell him he’s real and that their world is real and everything is okay. I think they’d fumble but the minute Will needs them, like really needs them all to step up, they’ll get it and start trying to handle things better. And they’ll do it with more understanding and compassion because that’s their friend and it’s their job! And they do it happily.
Ok would El or Will be the baby of the blended Byers/Hopper clan?
I’m hesitant to immediately say Will??? Because I just feel like El would just be so resistant to “babying”. Like I don’t think she’s get it. Joyce would try and do that mom thing where she wants to do something for her-- not that she NEEDS Joyce to but she wants to be a mom!!!-- and El would just be like *super mind powers to get her own glass of juice from the fridge even though Joyce has been fawning over her for the past ten minutes* but WILL??? Will has no choice. He just has to be like MOM!!!! while being spoiled regardless because she’s Joyce special little guy and he can’t do ANYTHING to change that not a damn thing
