Did you know, 2019 saw the lowest number of wild sockeye salmon return to the B.C. coast in history? In the Fraser River, 90% fewer sockeye returned than was forecasted by @fisheriesoceanscan. During their annual journey, sockeye and other threatened species of wild salmon must swim past open-net fish farms that spew a harmful virus called piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) into their migration route. Two years ago, B.C.’s salmon farming industry was caught dumping virus-infected blood into Discovery Passage, a critical area for returning wild salmon. Recent dives in November 2019 by @tavishcampbell have shown the blood is still flowing and is still infected with PRV. This virus, which came from the Atlantic ocean, infects 80% of the farmed fish in B.C. @justinpjtrudeau committed to removing fish farms from the ocean by 2025. Help ensure this promise is kept. Let him and DFO's Minister, @bernadettejordanmp how much you want them to #GetFishFarmsOut!
