One of my best friends said, and I quote word for word :
"And once again, the completely useless guy... The chemistry between Elphaba and Glinda on screen has absolutely nothing to do with the pseudo-relationship with that other clown."
Yes she talk about Fiyero...
The "clown" in question is literally the only character in this story who treated Elphaba properly, respected her, was always on her side, always chosing her, protected, and loved her unconditionally ?!
And "the completely useless guy" is literally the one who allowed Elphaba to escape capture for several years, saved her when she almost got captured by sacrificing himself, his life, for her, allowed her to have the flying monkey army on her side, and is the one who had the idea of ββfaking her death to go live quietly elsewhere in anonymity !
And we can also add everything I said about Fiyero in relation to Elphaba. Without him, she loses her only real support.
Not to mention that without him, the girls don't have the triggering event that makes them become friends !
I think my friend and I don't have the same definition of useless...
Literally, Fiyero's entire theme revolves around him feeling useless and brainless, his belief that he can't fail unless he tries, his desire to make people happy even though he's unhappy, and his dance through life because taking it seriously is pointless since we all end up as dust / dead, etc. To leave the theater with the idea that this character is supposedly useless and just a clown is to have done exactly what everyone (except Elphaba, who actually saw beyond the surface) did during the two films ; to simply see Fiyero on the surface. A pretty face with no brains who takes nothing seriously.
I'm fed up with people claiming that Fiyero is useless to the plot...
