I suddenly want to really compliment wi hajoon and lee byung hun's acting as the hwang brothers. Despite having only two scenes together where they are actually face to face (though Jun-ho was a hallucination in the other) both brothers are entirely complex and their feelings about each other are powerfully expressed.
Wi hajoon is one of the actors that I like to use as an example of the kind of acting that I enjoy. and I've seen some of his shows/movies before I watched squid game this year. He's an actor that properly knows how to control microexpressions and uses them very well, he completely changes the atmosphere from one to another and I think that's really important for Jun-ho as a character who goes through constant shifts in his emotions and personality because of how he feels for his older brother and his dilemma between choosing to put his brother above his morals or not. I don't think I need to say anything about byung hun's acting, he's really incredible and my opinion is similar to him with whj: split second microexpressions that show a sudden change of opinion and nature and being able to carry someone else's character when they aren't there is really important for the brothers.
In-ho's restrained devastation after shooting Jun-ho and putting the Front man's mask back on after in S1 is so well done, and his performance in S2 while talking about his family to Gi-hun felt incredibly heavy that I can't help but feel the care he has for Jun-ho slip out and surround him as he talks about wanting to help his wife and unborn child even if he's lying. All of Jun-ho's scenes in S1 express his strong and even destructive need to find his brother, there's absolutely no questioning it. You immediately and always understand through S1 that Jun-ho desperately loves his brother. In S2 he shows constant back and forth switches between choosing to protect his brother or wanting justice to be met, so we always know that In-ho is his biggest concern and most difficult choice. Even if one brother is on his own, you can feel the other's presence within the character.
The actors have a great connection with each other on screen too. Lee Byung-hun is a well experienced actor and I'm not surprised that he can bounce off from whj so well, but I like knowing that from him in an interview he said that he was able to see some scenes of hajoon acting in season 2 and says he's still very hardworking and always does his best to give it his all like in S1 (it's kind of cute to hear from him considering that hes hajoon's favourite senior actor). Hajoon himself admires byung-hun a lot from his words whenever asked about what it's like working with him, and he has said that because of how experienced and incredible of an actor byung-hun is, when he would look into byung-hun's eyes he could gather his emotions and follow byung-hun's "rhythm" naturally. The way these two portray the brothers individually is extremely detailed and meticulous, which is why even with two scenes where they properly look at each other, you just know how they feel about each other and it gives you so much to think about on their relationship and their childhood. I don't think anyone else would be able to capture what the hwang brothers have like how hajoon and byung-hun have done.
