Definitely one of the cutest baby birds out there, white tern chicks look like little balls of fluff with big black eyes. The most amazing thing about them, though, is that when they hatch, they have no nest to keep them safe in their tree. The mother simply lays an egg on the safest-looking bare branch she can find and hopes there are no strong wind gusts.
It may seem risky, but the lack of a nest actually helps reduce the risk of parasites and makes it harder for predators to spot them.

Manu-o-Ku (or the White Tern) for day 10 of Avian August!
Day 10: Manu-o-Kū, Honolulu's official bird! Arboreal nesters that don't build nests, they're instead adept at perching even as newly hatched chicks. I figure he's grown up around trees, so this guy's an arborist and woodcutter.
First sighting, White Terns. Norfolk Island.
On my travels. I always thought that pigeons were the laziest nest makers. These birds lay their egg on a tree branch. No nest, just a tree branch. They are however, a delight to watch soaring, then diving towards the ocean, then pulling up just shy of the water in a synchronised display of aerial ballet.
