I’ve been thinking a lot about the cosmic horror elements of the cowellverse.
HTTYD obviously has the seadragons, creatures so impossibly huge that you can never get a real sense of scale for them.
TWOO has magic, probably one of my favorite depictions of it. I’ve always loved how Encanzo is described as hard to look at due to the sheer amount of magic coursing through his entire body. Magic eyes have a color that is unknown and indescribable while still visible, which is similar to something that actually does appear in Lovecraft’s work!
WWTA surprisingly doesn’t have much of the stuff, but The Blue Room is actually pretty terrifying. The idea that there is this place in the universe that is so secret, so restricted, so forbidden that its physical description as well as the names of the people within it are actively withheld by the narrator herself for fear of retribution is unironically great horror material.
i KNOW, right! Cowell is unironically a great children's horror author despite not technically writing children's horror
been on my meeks shit lately
