Mittsie-ish poem I wrote like a year ago and never posted
I would hang the stars for you
And I see it in you that you would help to steady the ladder
Holding it still as I teeter on the top step
Watching me pin the soft lights to the endless black abyss so that we may find our way in the night
I would paint the fruit for you
And I would swatch the flushed hue from your lips
A splotchy red like strawberries when we kiss
And with a taste just as sweet to match
I would wash the clouds for you
And I would wring out the water in thick droplets
That gently thunk against our window pane
Lulling your cluttered mind slowly to sleep
I would sew the birds for you
And I would carefully stitch on each vibrant feather
Following how you attached the tattered peace sign to my sleeve
A reminder of what we really should’ve been fighting for all along.
I would sway the waves for you
And I would let them linger a little longer as they cover the shore
Like you draping the thick blanket over my shaking shoulders
Attempting to whisper my harsh memories away as I sob in your arms
I would sketch the hills for you
And I would run my pencil over the page like you run your fingers through my hair
Slowly, smoothly, with quiet undeserved care
Saying you forgive me, you forgive me, you forgive me
I would blow the wind for you
And my breath would whistle out of my lips
Ringing like the currently irrelevant tea kettle in my ears
As I watch you almost burn down our kitchen in an attempt at breakfast
I would mould the world for you
And I would leave no more space for those who say we’re wrong
Who say I’m scum or you’re stupid or we’re confused
And life’s beauty would burn brighter than ever before
I would invent a language for you
And I know I don’t have to since you already understand my incoherency
Because you know that birds are not sewn and clouds are not washed and fruit is not painted
But you know I would do it all for you
