i think one of the most inherently interesting things about this show, that maybe they did on purpose and maybe they didn’t, is that martin’s acts as the surgeon were to some extent sexually motivated. the way he talks about it here lends a sexual air, and the girl in the box that malcolm finds is naked, so.
you have martin, who is sexually gratified by murder. and this is an interest he talks about at length with his son, and which both of them bond over. and that’s weird! and interesting! there’s no way that their conversations about why people kill never touched on the sexual aspect of murder, on the eroticism of penetration.
and on top of this, you have martin consistently suggesting to malcolm that he’s just like martin, that he’s made of the same stuff. so what does that say?
and now im thinking about this sort of related thing, of like...malcolm’s bed is his cage, right? his bed is where he faces the nightmares he inherited from martin, and it’s where he must restrain himself every night as he prepares to rest. and how beds are like...inherently sexual places. obviously not only sexual places but like, certainly associated with sex. and malcolm’s bed is a place of misery and fear because it’s in bed that his thoughts are most out of control and focused on martin.
