"I heard it was your birthday." Elizabeth smiled brightly. "Happy birthday. I'd have gotten you a gift, but I wasn't sure what you'd have liked. I doubt pearls and seashells would appeal to you. I do have some books, though! If you'd like to pick one of those."
James hadn't even realized he told Elizabeth his birthday. Maybe he let it slip accidentally, or she heard from someone else, though he didn't think she knew a lot of other people he knew. Regardless, she knew somehow.
"It is. Thanks." It had been some years since he lived on the coast. A seashell wouldn't be a bad idea. "I...I don't want to take one of your books. Actually, maybe I'll take a look at the seashells. Might remind me of when I used to go to the beach when I was a kid." Before things went bad, but he didn't say that.
