TL:DR: Grandma mode: Nightmare difficulty. 880 words
Mamballa the Viper was Weyla’s liimasyr, her birth mother. She married Weyla’s father, Obidos, to complete his set of 4 wives & carry on the Miir-Y’mbotu clan. Mamballa was also of noble kaleesh blood, being from a high class assassin clan.
She was considered very successful. Every kaleesh wants to retire from a prolific (often violent) career & raise beautiful pups with an honorable warrior.
Weyla got her extra melanin from Mamballa & picked up many of her mannerisms. She got her passion from her father. Mamballa was supremely proud of Weyla & raised her to a high standard, which Weyla never failed to live up to.
Now usually when children grow up & move out of their privkliin, their parents don’t typically meddle too much in their family affairs. They are grown, after all, & kaleesh tend to stay in their own lanes. The family unit is considered a sacred thing. But, being so large, the Sheelal clan was bound to have some problematic grandparents.
When Weyla had her first pup in 35 BBY they named the infant Vangolla, borrowing syntax in honor of Mamballa, as was a common practice. Mamballa was beside herself with excitement. She had not been raising pups for quite a while at that point. Sure, some of her wives’ children have had a grandpup or two, but this was her amazing & resplendent Weyla! She felt it was her god-given duty to be sure her daughter’s first pup went right. This duty was given less by the gods & more by her ego.
It wasn’t entirely out of place for grandparents to visit but it was generally for an occasion. Mamballa would show up at the Sheelal compound unannounced with her carriage, her assistant Lajob, & her purse dog Tir-Obi. On a whim, this woman would travel from the south islands all the way to the Kunbal just to force the gift of her presence on her daughter’s new family. Her husband didn’t even know sometimes, as he would do his best to mitigate.
When Miimasyr Mamballa showed up she expected everyone to stop what they were doing & attend to her. She treated Weyla’s wives like the help & they were all very intimidated by her. This did not exclude even Blys’aan, despite Mamballa having attended their wedding. Mertenzi had zero fucks to give & mostly ignored her. She had a blooming household to run. It was only by the grace of Weyla that Mertenzi did not give the older woman a piece of her mind. Above all, no one wanted to embarrass Weyla.
The first few visits they endured, thinking she was just excited about her first grandpup. The next visit made it clear that this was going to be a routine for as long as she felt necessary. Weyla & Grievous decided to put a stop to it.
When family attended the next wedding (#5 Salaen & Kevanru, both also scared of Weyla’s mom) Weyla pulled Mamballa aside with her husband behind her like, “Mother we need to talk about your visits.”
Grievous said, “All due respect, masyr Mamballa, but I do not want to worry about you bullying my wives while I am away. No one likes a wyarma.” To which Mamballa, hissed, scandalized, & stormed off to tell her husband.
Wyarma directly translates to “greedy mom”. It was the kaleeshi way to accuse someone of backseat parenting, most often via grandparents. It isn’t necessarily super offensive, only to the most entitled of overbearing guardians. So, of course, Mamballa was appalled the Grievous would think them too good for her indispensable wisdom!
After that Mamballa’s spouses were able to convince her to cut down on surprise visits. Her husband got in a lot of “I told you so”s. Even though Mamballa did not like Grievous on the grounds that no one was good enough for her amazing daughter, the rest of Weyla’s family loved him. To get around her leash, Mamballa would send many gifts for Vangolla.
This, too, got to be problematic.
Raising children so socially, individual attention rides a very important line in a pup’s development. Just as it would be easy for a child’s individuality to fall to the wayside in a large family, the opposite is also true.
Weyla & Grievous both grew up on pedestals much higher than those of their siblings. Playing favorites alienates that pup from their siblings & makes all the other children feel unvalued. For Grievous, his liimasyr was so incredibly pushy about it that, even being straight up deified, he never had great relationships with most of his siblings. The resentment they harbored was that heavy.
Grievous put a stop to Mamballa’s excess again. Mamballa wants to send her little angel way too many very expensive little dresses? Put them on the other babies next time she comes over then look her in the face & DARE her to say something. Mission accomplished.
The Viper was then relegated to manageable holiday visits although she continued to be an in-law on nightmare mode. For all her entitlement she did really love her granddaughter. Miimasyr (grandma) & Grievous did agree on supporting Vangolla’s foray into the arts. This wasn’t something she thought he would allow, so she eventually conceded that he was not so bad.
