The Making of the Wetu' film speaks to Darius Coombs, one of the designers of a specially-commissioned Wetu that is hoped to travel to the UK later this year and go on display on the grounds of Bassetlaw Museum in Nottinghamshire - close to the homes of Mayflower passengers such as the Bradford and Brewster families.

‘Alternative Homes Hawai’i’ has looked at many alternative homes from around the world and we have chosen the Wampanoag ‘Wetu’ as the design for our gift to the Hawaiian people. A Wetu is a domed hut, used by some north-eastern Native American tribes such as the Wampanoag. They provided shelter, sometimes seasonal or temporary, for families near the wooded coast for hunting and fishing. They were made out of sticks of a red cedar frame covered with either tree bark or mats made from grass or reeds.

Paiute wickiup A wigwam, wickiup and wetu is a domed room dwelling used by certain Native American tribes. The term wickiup is generally used to label these kinds of dwellings in the American Southwest and West. Wigwam is usually applied to these structures in the American Northeast. Wetu is the Wampanoag term for a wigwam dwelling. The use of these terms by non-Native Americans is somewhat arbitrary and can refer to many distinct types of Native American structures regardless of location or cultural group. The wigwam is not to be confused with the Native Plains tipi which has a very different construction, structure, and use.
